http://windows7.digitalriver.com/store/mswpus/en_US/DisplayHomePage

Microsoft has a promotion for students to pre-order windows 7 for $29.

You can choose either:
Home Premium (normally $119 upgrade / $199 full)
Professional (normally $199 upgrade / $299 full)

The software is the full retail version however one caveat the $29 version is for download only (you burn your own copy) if you want disc shipped to you it is $13 for S&H. Either way $29 or $42 is 75% - 90% off.

If you have a .edu email address you can get instant access. If you don't you can send in a scanned copy of a school ID.

Also they have office 2007 for $59....

Lots of deals for students. Wish it was like that when I was in school.

3. Its not an ad and I don't work for microsoft.
If you don't want it then don't get it.

I just figured a student on a budget might like to get a 80% reduction on the price. They are doing it as a promotion so it likely won't last long.

on edit: DBAN is great if you want to wipe an entire drive, but don't use it carelessly.

14. +1. Clean installs just tend to be more reliable.
Backup, pop in DVD, reboot, installer runs from DVD and there is an option to format the drive. Clean install.

7. Great info, thank you!
I've been running the open beta for a while, and Windows 7 is a big step for them. And, for only $29, that's just icing on the cake! :)
