Oprah is reeeeaaaaly putting her ass on the line here. What will happen to her credibility if Rio
gets the Summer Olympic Games?

Hindsight tells me that it's a good thing she took a couple of pals with her for support. The Obamas might just might put her over the top, might help her win the day, but who knows? I actually heard somewhere that she decided to invite them as an afterthought.

What in the world was she thinking, taking this upon herself? As I understand it, no country in the history of the Olympic Games has sent a celebrity of her stature in an attempt to secure the hosting of the Summer Games. In fact, no country in the world has even HAD a celebrity of her stature. I'm still shaking my head over this decision. I'm desparately hoping that she isn't planning on promising any of the voters in this selection process a room at The Drake, which seems to be her favorite hotel in Chicago. I've stayed there and WOW, was I disappointed! The guy in the room next to me snored and had gas, and I had front row tickets to BOTH, due to the way the hotel is ventilated. That would be a very bad decision on her part. Promise them ANYTHING, but don't subject them to The Drake.

Jacques Rogge, whom I share a birthday with BTW, must be shaking in his boots at the prospect of meeting with Ms. Winfrey, and then possibly having to announce a vote contrary to her wishes. She'll absolutely crucify him in front of her base audience comprised of retired women, stay at home wives, and men who work the swing and graveyard shifts. And if he has a book in the offing? Well, Mr. Rogge, you can forget that book showing up on the Oprah Book of the Month Club list, Sir.

Whoa, I hope for Oprah's sake this turns out good, otherwise those right wing idiots might wind up calling her Noprah! Where would we be then?

11. really....I didn't even read it til you mentioned that. I thought you were
snarking the piece, but it's very funny, specially the bit about the Drake, where the rooms go for a very pretty penny these days

7. no offense but I could care less about Oprah
I am not in awe of celeb's at all. If it blows up in her face well she put in there. I can't even imagine what business it is of hers to get involved.

I thought countries/ cities bid on this or where selected but I don't recall a president ever doing this.

8. Oprah's on a roll, she wants those Olympics.
She already believes she helped put Obama in the White House. She's empowered. She's Oprah. She can will the Olympics to Chicago, her town.

After a certain point, I think one can make an argument about illusions of grandeur.

10. Damn, the Drake must be a real dump!
I've stayed in some dumps. Some with cedar paneling on the walls, others with mirrors on the ceiling, still others that rented by the hour, but I've never been subjected to farts from an adjoining room. That would even be beyond my tolerance.

15. Maybe Oprah's not that big a "star" to a Belgian.
Sometimes I think we forget that America isn't the be all end all of everything on this planet.

16. I don't think her credibility is at stake
since neither she nor the Obamas are in control of the outcome. Something tells me that both she and the Obamas will be just fine should the committee choose another city.

17. Why isn't Oprah putting her ass on the line or money where her mouth is for Health Care or Global
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 10:38 PM by earth mom
Warming?

It pisses me off that she is worried about the Olympics when there are far bigger and pressing issues that she could use her money, power & influence to help with.

Oprah is an air head aka idiot. :argh:
