1. Stunningly bad judgment on Letterman's part to mess around
with his employees. That said, he did the smart thing by disclosing his actions.

3. I admire (yes.. admire) that he gave consideration to the possibility of
embarrassment to the women involved.

8. He only disclosed them because he got caught
Which is the same thing that's happened with Ensign, Craig, Sanford, and Edwards, to name just a few. It's hard to condemn them, and say that Letterman's doing it is something else entirely.

23. The "election" is conducted via ratings
It's a different kind of office, but you can bet that the "votes" he gets through viewership is primary in his mind.

This really is similar to a campaign--we have government elected officials and we have pop culture officials who are elected via their number of viewers. And Letterman is one of the leading pop culture icons.

We live in a pop culture world. Obama bridges both sides--he won the political election AND he won the pop culture election. It's a whole new world than our parents grew up in, and thank goodness we've got a leader who can take us into it.

15. Based on what we know at this time, I do see a difference in these situations.
For starters, I tend to hold elected officials to a higher standard of conduct than I do entertainers. Maybe this is unrealistic, but I expect politicians to deserve the public trust that goes along with the office they are elected to.

Also, AFIK, Letterman had not broken any laws with his conduct and didn't lie to try to cover them up. He may have used poor judgment in getting involved in a workplace relationship, but unless he was using his position to coerce his partners, it was pretty much a private matter. He is the one who broke the news when an illegal action was brought against him. Had he refused to pay the blackmail it would have been embarrassing for him and the other parties involved, but it probably would not have ruined his career.

19. Letterman is not an elected official...
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 08:58 AM by CoffeeCat
He can screw whoever he wants. That's his personal business. He isn't obligated to tell us who he has
sex with, and we have no business wanting that information.

There's another tangent to this--that you're forgetting. Letterman came forward to expose the blackmailer. In
my opinion, Letterman was courageous. Do you know how many of our politicians are most likely controlled by
blackmail. They're the selfish ones, covering their own asses while they compromise democracy.

Also, Letterman is a comedian. He doesn't offer himself up as a public official--who is more beholden to the public.
And he certainly doesn't saunter around the country, with his family in tow--obtaining his position by using his
family to project a certain image. Letterman is an entertainer, unlike the politicians who obtain their positions by
putting forth an image (that we hope is accurate). When that image turns out to be a lie--the entire basis for their political
positions becomes null and void, in my opinion.

MAJOR, obvious differences between Letterman and elected officials.

24. Well, Why Else
would he disclose them? I certainly wouldn't want or expect my exs to take out newspaper ads (seeing as how they aren't famous) disclosing their various affairs. No one should even be in the position of having to "disclose" their sex life.

6. I'm all grown-up at 51 y.o. and "celebrity sex" with Letterman or any other
arrogant PUBLIC ego is way NOT EROTIC.

It's IMO, bottom feeder, ego-destroying "groupie sex." :puke:

Just sad.

We all could do better.

11. Yes, him and Gary Condit.
I told my husband, at the time this scandal broke: If I was his Flight Attendent, Gary Condit could be throwing $100 bills at me in the First Class aisle, and I still wouldn't be tempted to jump his ugly bones. :scared: :puke:

10. I disagree for one reason
The women he did this with were not groupies from the audience, they were people on the staff of the show. There's a big difference, they might have done it to be able to keep their jobs.

I don't know if you've ever had the misfortune to work in a place where the boss manages the office out of his pants, but it means favorable treatment for people who can otherwise slack off, and more work for those who have to pick up the burden. The boss dipping his pen in company ink affects all the workers, not just those he beds.

I feel sorry for Letterman's son. He's going to read about all of this some day, and is going to wonder why his mother even stayed with this man.

It's not going to be pretty. :(

25. I worked for a guy like that
He made propositions to me all the time, and treated me waaaayyy differently when I got tired of it and told him I would tell his wife on him.

From then on, he was a bit of an asshole to me.

Thing was, it was a very small company and besides myself, there was only one other lady in the office and she was only part time (and his aunt to boot). Often I was the only one in the office when he and the service tech guys were away on business.

So he kind of had no way to exact revenge on me by threatening to fire me because he knew I hated my job anyway and didn't think much of him, either.

In some ways, I think I probably had more "power" over him than he had over me. Although I do realize that's not the case for every woman.

Umm.. yeah.

And this guy is "sexy"??

It must be nice being rich and famous. It seems to give a lot of people around you the equivalent of beer goggles.

My teenage neighbor was over yesterday and I overheard him saying that Madonna is "like a fine wine. She just gets better with age." That had me rolling on the floor. Forget plastic surgery. If you want to stay hot, become a celebrity.

26. Hey, don't fret about it...
I wouldn't wanna have sex with someone old enough to be my grandpa, either.

Mainly because the guy would be like, 99 years old...

But anyway, I don't see anything wrong with not wanting to have sex with younger OR older people...
