Am I the only one bothered by these "empty suits" making the transition directly from wealthy actor to Governor? Nothing qualified either of these two men to be Governor of my state except for the fact that they were famous through the entertainment industry. Hell, at least Sarah Palin started out with the Wasilla City Council.

Actually, I'm not as bothered with them so much as I'm bothered with the morons who vote for them.

1. You can say the same of Al Franken

Al is not an empty suit. And he is not owned by a capitalist ideology or by big money. He is committed to helping people. That's the difference.

2. Reagan had a background in politics
Not as a candidate for public office, but then one has to start somewhere and not every politician starts with a candidacy at the local level or for lower-level state offices. But I think Reagan's experience as SAG president easily trumps Palin's work on the Wasilla City Council ;) The policies of both were repulsive, of course.

The results of people turning name recognition into jump-started political careers are not always bad: Bill Bradley was a great senator, and he ran for office just a year after retiring from the NBA. Franken has the chance to be a great senator in Minnesota. And so on.

3. Do they meet the qualifications for that particular office - residency,
age, etc?

Is there a requirement for "dues" as a qualifier?

4. Like you, I am disappointed with people who vote by celebrity status alone
