Letterman vs. Ensign
October 3, 2009 2:30 pm.

A woman writes to the NY Times:

When the Letterman and Sen. John Ensign blackmail stories broke yesterday, I couldn’t help wondering if anybody but me noticed how differently they were handled. The funny man did the honorable thing. The man who was elected on the ‘values’ ticket did everything he could to keep the story covered up.

Increasingly we keep finding in America that the comedians are turning out to be the ones in the public eye that react most realistically.

1. That letter writer is not the only one who noticed difference between Letterman/Ensign's behavior
Since Letterman most likely has the money to have paid the hush money without running home to momma & daddy, the difference between his reaction and Ensign's desperate attempts to cover up bad behavior is all the more glaring.

2. Excellent point....
...how Letterman handled the problem speaks of intelligence. How Ensign handled it speaks of dishonesty and immaturity.

3. Ensign's parents have probably been bailing him out
all hi slife. His approach demonstrated arrogance and hubris. I hope he's destroyed for good this time.

Ensign's Adultery and His Parents' Tax Planning

Adultery and Tax Planning

Paul Caron follows up on Sen. John Ensign's extramarital affair with Cynthia Hampton, a campaign staffer married to Douglas Hampton, Sen. Ensign's former chief of staff.

He notes "that the $96,000 in 'gifts' by Sen. Ensign's parents to the Hamptons was structured in the form of eight checks of $12,000 each -- four checks each from Sen. Ensign's father and mother to Cynthia Hampton, Douglas Hampton, and their two children in order to take full advantage of the $12,000 gift tax annual exclusion available in 2008. This week's New York Times' detailed investigation should prompt the IRS to question the treatment of the $96,000 payment as a gift in light of the possible legal claims by the Hamptons against Sen. Ensign."

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reports Ensign's future "grew more unsettled Friday as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell declined to offer his support or express confidence in the embattled Nevada Republican."

7. Cheating on a spouse versus a boss sleeping with employees
my guess is Letterman will be going to court on sexual harassment charges - whether or not his flings allowed some workers to get ahead and others not to there is now money to be made in court for both those who slept with him and those who didn't.

9. agreed, but I don't think there was any adultery involved with Dave's problem
Honestly, as long as there is no sexual harassment involved then it would seem that Dave didn't really do anything seriously wrong. Yes, he had a girlfriend but he claims that all the affairs stopped before he got married.

As he said, he isn't a saint, but he isn't an adulterer either.

13. I cant believe the amount of crap
That letterman has to put up with, first with his son and the kidnapping plot, then Palin basically saying he supported child molestation and now this, I feel sorry for him.

14. Those two don't even belong in the same sentence.
Maybe if John Edwards had half the class of Letterman I wouldn't feel so much resentment right now.

John Ensign? Nothing but a piece of crap.
