1. It's also one of the reasons we won't get single payer health care.

3. Not as long as the money isn't going HERE, but DUBAI...
Edited on Sun Oct-04-09 12:04 PM by FormerDittoHead
In WWII, the money spent to build tanks, planes and guns was spent HERE to employ people, and that increased demand.

But the money for these wars is going to VERY FEW contractors, and they don't spend it HERE.

In Ancient Egypt, the rulers controlled people by taking the surplus of their lives after bare living and directed it into making the pyramids.

Up to the 90's, the defense department built thousands of nukes and missiles never to be used. But they employed a lot of people.

The tax loop holes which Obama promised to close remain open, and he hasn't done anything to stop gov't (our) money from flowing into them.

So much work to do.

7. Good point - I've got an M1 Carbine made during WWII......
by General Motors. All the automotive companies were making war materiel during that time. I don't think any of it was outsourced.

4. Nope it won't happen
WE won't get single payer because we can't afford it so it looks to me like the powers to be will keep the two wars in order to keep us without meaningful healthcare.

5. Impossible
Congress and Obama's priorities are screwed up. The first thing he should have done is to get all his troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan as soon has he was sworn into office. Then used that money allocated for the war for a public jobs expansion.

6. The recession is nearing the end
The President is currently pulling the troops out of Iraq to focus on the real front of the war, AfPak. As Americans we must stand united in the fight against Al Qaeda and the Taliban and realize that until Osama Bin Laden is either killed or captured we are at risk of major terror operations within the homeland. I support President Obama in the direction he is leading our foreign policy. After eight years of a bumbling drunken idiot advocating corporate profit over life, it is refreshing to have a Commander in Chief who is willing to listen to the Intelligence Community and deliver on his promise of change.

14. The recession is nearing the end?
Really?

A consumer based economy with a huge trade deficit is about to pull itself out of a recession with high unemployment (those damn consumers tend to consume less when they don't have jobs). Pray tell what is bringing us out of this recession. Magic?

19. We still had a manufacturing base in the US during WWII
And all those trillions we spent to manufacture weapons, planes, tanks, etc, were spent in American factories, with wages paid to (largely unionized) American workers, who then bought other goods and services produced by other Americans.

Today, our economy is driven by consumers rocketing themselves into debt by buying foreign-made goods, and our dwindling manufacturing capabilities are increasingly non-unionized.

The economy we have today is nothing like the one we had in 1940.

18. We can. They're different kinds of problems.
The war spending redirects production toward pursuits that are not helpful to our living standards; the recession is a reduction in overall production brought about by the economy's failure to fully employ the available resources. Lots of spending on utterly useless tasks--the famous example is hiring people to dig holes and fill them in--might actually solve the second problem, while obviously only worsening the first.
