I wrote a column about this several years ago called "It's Piratize, Not Privatize"
http://www.democrats.us/editorial/lyon031705.shtmlAnd proud to say I, too, am passing that one on! We should all start repeating it and repeating it and repeating it - infusing our conversation with it so that soon enough, in other people's minds and ears, it becomes, in effect, a truism. It's how others who hear it repeatedly from us start to think of it. It should be as common a usage as "tax relief" which subconsciously and ever so subtly teaches you that taxes themselves are something bad - something you need "relief" from. "Death panels." Shit! ANYTHING attached to the word "death" becomes literally deathly. Derivatives of "freedom" are great words, positive words, words about something that's good and desirable. Notice how the bad guys attach them to stuff THEY like and want, all the time. "Free market." "Liberty University" - oh for the love of God!!! Same for "family." "Family values." "Family research council." It's WORD MANIPULATION. And the more clever it is (as "piratization" CERTAINLY is), the easier and more strongly it'll stick in the mind. Like an earworm! Like that excruciatingly catchy tune you just heard for the first time, but go on singing for the entire rest of the day.
AND WE NEED TO DO THAT, TOO. WITH BELLS ON AND CANNONS BLAZING!!!
Nikki, your post is not just a post. It's a public service!
In this case, PIRACY is precisely what it is! Let's all call it what it is. Once we paint it that way, others will see it that way. And as frank luntz would endorse, repetition is everything. It starts to take on a life of its own after just a little while. It goes viral. The bad guys do this like breathing. That's EXACTLY what WE need to do, too.
And any time any one of us comes up with some catchy slogan - THIS is an ideal place to post it. More people will see it and maybe start using it. I heard an absolute knock-me-on-my-ass one the other day:
"Politics is like driving. If you want to go forward, you shift to 'D'. If you want to go backward, you shift to 'R'."
I had one personal experience that really amazed me and proved all this to me. Back during the days of dread, I started referring bush's national security advisor/secretary of state/backstage girl as Contradicta. Back when she'd done something that proved how utterly idiotic she was/is (one of a series of things), I called my congressman about it - I think it was when we were demanding that she testify before the 9/11 Commission which she was refusing to do. And I referred to her, in conversation with the staffer who took my call, as Contradicta. I believe I remember a chuckle on the other end of the phone. I also called a random couple of other congresspeople (Hey, don't forget those TOLL FREE Capitol Hill switchboard numbers! Do two or three calls in one sitting, if you have a few spare minutes!) and used that reference there, too. The next week, I called in again about the same issue because she was still dragging her heels, and referred to her as Contradicta. It might have been the same staffer I'd talked to originally because he chuckled again. He said "Contradicta! That's GREAT! I've heard that before! I think some constituent called that in, like, about a week ago." I said "yeah, that would be me. I'm the one who said that - I guess, to you?" He said "yeah! Contradicta! It's awesome! It's all over the Hill now!"
If you come up with something clever, it'll catch on. 'Cause it'll make a strong impression on YOU and be easy to remember, and if it did that to you, it'll most likely do that to the next person who hears it, also. And when that person repeats it... etc. Besides, if it's that clever that it becomes that memorable, the person repeating it will FEEL clever just for having said it.
