1. House and senate need to pull it out. Not sure how Obama can.
Have you even head him talking about it?

2. If he can make it clear that he WANTS the public option, even Baucus will have to bend
The will of a president can go a long way if he uses it.

How could we possibly know if he is the best president in a while?

He hasn't even completed his first year.

4. He's an intelligent guy, and I think his heart is in the right place
I'll reserve my judgment.

Being the best President we've had in a long time is not saying much, in order to pull us out of this mess he needs to be the best President since FDR.

32. If you consider 8 years "a long time."
He's certainly the best president we've had since Jan 20, 2001.

I hope he'll do something to get the public option, but he's looking pretty flaky on the point.

33. It's sad..
... that another "great talking" but "nothing doing" president is the greatest we've had in a long time.

Really sad.

When we:

Stop bailing out banks and start bailing out America

Pass health care reform that isn't just another sop the the insurance and pharma lobby

Get the fuck out of the middle east

Actually enact meaningful "too big to fail" break them up legislation

Regulate financial weapons of mass destruction (derivatives) in a meaningful way

Do SOMETHING to limit the influence of corporate money in Washington

Then I'll be ready to talk about great presidents. Right now, we have a great talker, and that is ALL.

34. It's just nice to believe that the guy at the top doesn't have ulterior motives
honest to God, and I am 60, this is the first time since Carter that we have had a President who isn't a complete asshole with an agenda to make his buddies rich and I sure hope I am not an idiot for campaigning for him last year. I just have NO faith that anyone can become President of anything w/o an agenda. I am less fearful of Obama's agenda than I've been of the Democrats who have sought office since Carter. But after a lifetime of lies - I remain skeptical.

I don't know about 'best in a long time'. When you extract all the GOP presidents (Reagan, Bushes, Nixon, Eisenhower) that leaves Clinton, Carter, LBJ, JFK, Truman, FDR in recent history. Of those LBJ and FDR were far more willing to fight for what was right. Truman was willing to integrate the military and tried to overturn the Taft-Hartly act. Obama doesn't have near the backbone they did.

I think Obama is a decent person. But I think he is not really aware of the motivations and personalities of his opposition or doesn't seem to care. I hope Obama doesn't think a good speech can win over the GOP, since it can't. There are about 20-25% of this nation that are protofascist, dogmatic, uninformed, simple minded, aggressive, authoritarian, undemocratic and hateful. They control the GOP and you can't win them over with pretty speeches.

The best you can do is steamroll past them and try to negate the damage they will do in retaliation.
