OC Register - Third-Grader Loses Mom Who Refused To Go To Doctor While Keeping Bills In Order
Edited on Sun Oct-04-09 11:34 PM by TomCADem
The Republican health care plan at work.

Third grade boy has brittle bone disease, and is being cared for by mom. Mom experiences head aches. The family is under financial pressure trying to keep their bills in order, so mom refuses to go to the doctor. The headaches turn out to be a brain tumor. Mom dies, and the community holds a fundraiser for the third grader.

###

Max Nelson, 8, suffers from brittle bone disease, a genetic protein disorder that causes the bones to break easily, and uses a wheelchair.

School parent Marisa Campbell offered to organize the fundraiser to buy Max a new wheelchair, set up a care fund for the family and help offset funeral costs.

"All the support I'm getting from these mothers is unreal," said Bryan Nelson, Lisa Nelson's husband. "It's almost overwhelming."

While his father worked to sustain the family financially, Max's mother was his emotional pillar.

When Max was 3, Lisa Nelson quit her job at a local bank to take care of him.

"If you can imagine what she had to do in order to take care of this little boy," Bryan Nelson said. "She went from being out with the public to being a stay-at-home mom…and she did a great job."

Lisa Nelson started suffering from headaches several months ago but her husband could not convince her to go to the doctor. She was occupied with caring for her widowed mother and making sure to keep her house and bills in order while doing the same for her own family.

"We all thought it was depression because she had so much on her plate," her husband said. "She was taking care of Max and me and doing everything for her mother."

But in late August Lisa Nelson woke up and it appeared she had a stroke.

"Her smile was crooked," her husband said.

Doctors discovered she had lesions on her brain that were later determined to be cancerous. Within three weeks, the cancer spread through her body. She was admitted to the hospital on Sept. 6 and died four days later.

"The doctors wanted us to do chemo and radiation but told us that would only extend her life by a couple weeks or a month," he said. "She didn't want to do that."

News of Lisa Nelson's death quickly spread at Hope View Elementary. Because she was very involved in school activities, parents began stepping forward to help the family.

12. Actually, they just want you to *be* pennyless..
They don't really care whether you live or die as long as it doesn't cost anything.

After all, dead serfs are useless save as food or fertilizer.

If you are well enough to work, then another nickle or two can always be squeezed from you, if you are not well enough to work then you should die quickly so as not to steal resources from some rich person.

The thing is, Limbaugh really would. He truly is a psychopath with no empathy.

14. Could she have been saved?
Am I the only person who thinks its relevant? I figure if you can't live a few years the pain isn't worth it. Hell I'd probably prefer euthanasia myself.

21. Depends on the tumor.
Some are curable, some are not.

22. After seeing everything medicine could buy with Teddy Kennedy
I'm less moved by this than maybe I ought to be. I'm not going to go off in outrage unless I know it was the kind that was curable. Since it makes no claim that it was the curable type, which would have supported true outrage, I'm thinking the writer knew it wasn't. I hate it when I feel like the media is manipulating me.

How many of these RW, gated community privileged, I've got mine, fu@k you, Ronald Regan sycophants, will read this over their morning lattes and think, oh what a shame, but won't be moved to rethink their stance on health care.

18. The Republican response: she should have had the Personal Responsibility to not get sick
Or the personal responsibility to be rich enough to pay for her child's expensive health care and her own. It's all about personal responsibility, you know.

Welfare? That's just for profitable corporations. Anything else would be socialism.

(The above is sarcasm, of course.)

24. Whole Foods CEO Would Say She Just Needs To Shop At Whole Food. Also, Betsy McCaughey...
Also, Betsy McCaughey (who debated Anthony Weinger) would argue that the reason why they could not afford health care is because the health care is so good. You have to pay for quality:

http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/10/weiner-and-mccaughey-go-head-to-head-in-health-care-debate.php?ref=mp

###

"Americans spend more on health care because they can afford more," she said.

"We can encourage people to lead healthier lifestyles," she said.

McCaughey argued that American health care is expensive because it's the best in the world. "We earn more, and we can afford more," she said.

20. If you are in the situation of caring for someone sick and need help- CALL DOMINICAN SISTERS
Edited on Mon Oct-05-09 10:37 AM by KittyWampus
they are there, they will help.

To be clear- I'm not remotely suggesting this would have solved this families economic problems. But as a way to deal with caring for sick family members, the Dominican Sisters are wonderful. They've helped us tremendously.
