even though there are more RWingers, and nasty assholes here than I have ever seen,
and so many amazing, thoughtful, intelligent, authentic progressives are gone..

Truthfully, it feels as if the critical mass here is turning right and dumbing down, down, down.

Other people may choose what they perceive as the "high road" of tolerance and community, but I've no time for blithering foolishness and no interest in useless poppycock. Some will disagree but I figure they must have a surplus of life.

If it makes you feel better about the DU "family" or some other such fantasy, you can occasionally clear your entire Ignore list. I do. Often, I find those I've shut off were soon after tombstoned, so I don't feel I missed anything.

but who are enamored with their own opinions and if not for the fact that so many are loudly professed atheists they believe their words are straight from the mouth of God or god, whatever the case may be. There are those here who voted for the same guy for President as I did, but I wouldn't want to spend a minute with them in real life. It's bad enough to have to deal with annoying people in real life so I see no reason to put up with them here, especially when they are so easily ignored.

Funny ..... the nastiest primary here was not the 08 primary. It was 04. I recall getting REALLY pissed back then but it was with other people who mostly agreed with me, and I with them. Today I find myself their ally.

Since the 08 primary, the level of discourse and the thoughtfulness went down. The invective we all aimed at the right was turned on ourselves. Now, I find more to be upset with by **some** posters here than with anyone on the right.

Except that, when one cuts through the bullshit, these posters ARE the right. Except they're here.

And yes, many of the best, most insightful, most thoughtful posters are gone. In their place we have ...... never mind ..... you know what I mean.

we've been members of this community for a while.
I'm sick of the stupid and cruel, but unless they throw me out, I'll hang around because I have family here.

a good while longer than those you refer to. There are still people here I consider brothers and sisters, so I'm still here. They become fewer all the time, though, between those that HAVE been thrown out, and those that have thrown up their hands in disgust and left on their own.

What's become increasingly clear to me over the years (8 years on DU! OMG!) is that self-proclaimed "liberals" and "progressives" HATE the Left.

Sadly, after all these years on DU, for me at least, the feeling has become mutual.

It took me a good 8 or so months to de-cloak and log on. What a wild ride it's been: the Nader wars, The Grassy Noll Society, the Colleen Rowley testimony, the crushing 2002 election- wow. Here's a clue: You can be all for reproductive rights, feminism, racial equality, GLBT rights, and recycling, but if you're against unions and workers' rights, against public education (which needs improvement, not abolition), against busting up large corporations and agribusiness, against publicly funded health care, against prosecuting the Bushies for war crimes, against "big government," and for increased military spending, high executive compensation, low taxes, and "the War on Terror," then guess what--you aren't a Leftist, at least not in the way Leftists define themselves. (See the positions of the Democratic Socialists, the Greens, and the Progressive Caucus of your state Democratic Party.)

If your "leftism" is based entirely on social issues (social issues are good--but they're just one aspect of being left), then you're a yuppie Democrat, or even, sad to say, a Libertarian.

In political terms, being economically left is the only LEFT that really counts.

If you're not fighting for the Working Class, you're NOT a Leftist.

I was here some years back for a few years. Past 2 years I was involved in watching my life fall apart but came back recently (new screen name). I have been shocked at some of the decidedly RW views I see over 1000's posting. I do, when absolutely necessary, take a pragmatic view but never pro-corporate, anti-worker, anti-choice, and on and on. It's been very sad to read some of what has been passing for Democratic here since my return.

of truly great minds here on du...Ive never tried..simply don't have the time to do more than what I do now on here which is to attempt to keep up with the recent news...I do admit though I sincerely miss many Dur's who where here when I joined ....but I also believe we have picked up voices just as valuable...the problem is..we are inundated with freepers..fact...I think they are simply bored on their own boards regardless of what they tell each other is the reasoning for hanging out in du..

the simple truth is though they have ruined us a bit with their ignorance..they will never take away from the good du has done in the past and will continue to do in years to come....

yes some like to cause trouble for Dem's but I honestly believe even if they never admit it..we are the best board and they know it...sad that their presence though has kind of at times brought us down a notch but such is the reality of a democracy where free speech is a right....and with that... I will take their foul presence as long as I never lose our right of free speech and free thought.

I think DU has had a major impact and I think it has been ground-breaking.
I remember DUer's getting together on the spot and sending flowers to a congressman who was standing up against the Iraq war. He received those flowers on the floor, from what I recall. I've posted here, for example, concerning the plight of grey wolves. and people actually donated to the org doing the work to protect them. I've posted about the ACLU, and people said they were inspired to renew their membership. The potential is really awesome.

I don't know, maybe I'm thinking even border line freepers, should go.

the left isn't going anywhere, but votes from the left just might. If the "centrists" are truly that determined to purge the left, I'm wondering what their plans are for winning future elections. That Democratic majority? It didn't happen without the votes from the left. Neither did the Democratic win in the presidential election.

Are they truly alienating a block they need to stay in power, or are they planning to replace the left with moderate republicans?
