I'm not getting either one. I got a flu shot over 14 years ago & it's the only time I've ever had the damn flu! Sorry to the medical community for not believing in this stuff. I'm not a kid & not pregnant (66 yo) and I'm just not willing to take the chance.

1. I will
I've had flu vaccines for over 10 years at least and have never gotten the flu when I had one. So I'm batting a 1000 with them and will take the regular one next week and the H1N1 if it's available.

77. I'm not getting either.. either
#1 - the flu likely won't kill me - i'm relatively healthy
#2 - i don't trust these things in general (if it were for something i thought could be fatal to me i would look into it more)
#3 - last time i got the flu shot i ended up with the worst flu of my life. haven't gotten one since, haven't gotten the flu since. just my experiences - yours may vary.. ;)

7. Suit yourself.
I've gotten the flu shot. Awaiting the h1n1.
Neither of my granddaughters had gotten theirs yet-- and we've been fighting (confirmed) flu for 2 weeks. The 6 month old has had temps since Friday with the highest being 106 but averaging around 103. She is very sick.
I imagine unless things change drastically we will be facing another all-nighter sitting up with sick kids.
By the way, there is absolutely no way the flu shot can give you the flu. It is impossible. You were just exposed to the flu before you had time to build antibodies to it.
Stay well. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy (well maybe would make exceptions for the ilk of rush).

13. You may be right about the antibodies, but if I haven't gotten it
the flu in that length of time, maybe I just haven't been exposed or maybe my weird body has some kind of imunity. If that 6 month old had a feaver of 106, I'd be checking the ER! I don't want to scare you, but that's unreasonably high! At the very least, call them!

Have an appt for in the am for another check.
They really don't want these kids in the hospital unless there is no other choice--difficulty breathing, inability to keep hydrated, etc.
We are doing antibiotics, Tamiflu, Motrin, Tylenol and tepid baths around the clock.
It has been awful.

last month....I feel for you...but your doing everything you can...the kids liked me putting cool wet rags on their foreheads...helped their heads not hurt so bad so they said...then after several days the worst had passed thankfully but my daughter still wants them to get both flu shots as well...she does not want to go through that again..

My husband had flu last week..the tamiflu really brought him back..like the kids he has lingering symptons but not bad..........

14. There is also a possibility that the flu strain they got was not one in the vaccine
Every year they make the vaccines with strains they believe are most probable. It is possible that you can get a strain that wasn't in the vaccine

All your other points are right on also

12. We were advised by our county to get our flu shots
early, and we did. Our primary care MD has always insisted that we have flu shots since we'd entered our mid-60s because we were in the vulnerable age group. But now that we're both 76 and 79, I doubt we'll get the swine flu shot, since there appear to be too many vulnerable younger people who will need it.

I don't know how credible this information is, but I've read on several sites that those born before 1957 are likely immune to this particular flu because so much flu of a similar type was around before then.

Best advice for everyone is talk to your personal physician..:hi:

57. Let me add this to my original post.. because it is important..you may need the shot
even if you were born before 1955 if you have an underlying heath condition. Talk to your personal physician.

But the best advice we are getting and giving of course is hand washing. The problem with HINI is that it is airborne.. and so even great hand washing will not always protect you.

Everyone stay safe out there.

I would put getting it for my kids ahead of me. I found the std flu mist vaccine for my kids so I didn't have to deal with any crap about a shot since they'll be getting the H1 shot if I find it.

I have never had a flu shot and I don't plan to start getting them now. I had the flu once several years ago and it was an ugly experience. I don't think I've ever been more sick in my life but I'll take my chances.

As for the H1N1 thing, I don't trust the PR coming from the powers-that-be. Nobody knows what the long-term side effects are. If I was a pregnant woman there's no way in HELL I'd get the damned thing for this reason alone. Since I'm 64 years old I'm probably not as much at risk as some segments of the populace supposedly are. Again, I'll take my chances.

63. I got my regular flu shot already, but will hold off on the other
I just think I'm a pretty healthy person and only 29, and would rather people that are younger, elderly, health care workers, etc get it first. I wash my hands and use hand sanitizer often, and there's been a few people at work that got the swine flu, but they're NOT coming to work.

64. You probably have some immunity to H1N1 anyway..
the vaccine is mainly intended for younger people.

I will probably get it, as I'm in a (moderate) health risk group and work a lot with young children. I probably won't get the other flu vaccine; may be famous last words!

66. Probably.
With asthma, a "really bad" respiratory flu is probably something I can do without.

...don't trust the pharmaceutical companies, don't trust the researchers...

I had the hong kong flu...w/ hallucinations and very high fever....since then I've had the flu 3 times all relatively mild compared to having the hong kong flu

it.

82. Your co-workers must really love working with Typhoid Mary. My very first EVER strep throat...
... came from a co-worker just like you -- nothing could keep that gal home in bed, she was that dedicated.

79. Neither - I've never had the flu.
Mid-40's, but I've never had the flu.

I did get Whooping Cough 3 years ago - that really sucked.

81. I did and I will. Am offering to pay for my pregnant daughter and her 5 y.o. to get vaccinated...
My son in law can skip it because he thinks he's invulnerable anyway.

83. Nope.
But I am laying in a supply of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambucus#Medicinal_Use">Elderberry Extract which has been shown to be effective in dealing with the flu, and a recent study has shown it to be http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19682714">effective against H1N1 in vitro.

85. I don't usually like to get them.
I'm one of those people who fear the shot more than the flu.

But this year I have caved and gotten the regular flu shot and will probably get the novel flu shot as well in consideration for my room mate. He has a compromised immune system. It's ok for me to gamble on whether I get the flu or not but it's not fair to gamble with his health.

I'll wait another week to decide.
