Year Nine of the Lost War, and Obama is Going to Escalate.
Remember the posts saying Obama can't lose what Bush already lost? Well, let's not fool ourselves. Obama can't win what is already lost. It is reported that he will not take the advice of VP Biden in scaling back our footprint in Afghanistan. The opposite, in fact. Obama is going to expand. No surprise really. Somewhere between 10,000 and 40,000 more troops will be headed to put their lives on the line for a lost war.

We will have somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 total US troops in Afghanistan. There are more 'contractors' there than that. We are surpassing the cost of the Iraq war.

The anti-war movement needs to get in Obama's face. This is not a war of necessity. It is a waste of resources and lives. He is dooming himself and our country by ignoring the reality of the lost war.

War without end....

3. The True Definition Of A Quagmire...

and it sure ain't this...

My fear the last two years was that the booosh regime was doing all it could to dig whomever took over afterwards into wars that would take more troops and money to figure out. Sadly this seems to be the case.

The US rushed into two wars with no real endgame...other than some neo-con dream of "democracy". Focus on Afghanistan shifted (if there ever was a focus) and instead of going after those who attacked this country, our military became bogged down in a tribal war...even worse, in the middle. Taliban were equated with Al Queda...and many were told that the war had been "won". Yet our troops remained. It's been a nightmare that continues and the solution becomes murkier and murkier.

It can be argued that if the invasion had caught bin Laden or, as some claim, it's diminished Al Queda's ability to launch another attack on US Soil, then it's mission accomplished and if we bug out without resolving this it makes us more vulnerable. As this view is taken, the involvement will continue.

What President Obama needs is to get a focus here...and not sure he is capable with so many other things diverting attention. The other problem was a non-existant State Department for 8 years...especially under Rice. Restoring credibility and coordination is taking time...meanwhile the situation inside Afghanistan erodes and our military is caught in the middle of tribal wars.

4. I'm not sure how old this article is, but maybe our leaders need to understand
what they got into and are continuing to escalate.
This is not a country that is going to be easy to tame with our hand picked man in charge. This is an interesting article that gives a short insight into the complicated elements that make up Afghanistan. US style government isn't always the panacea that we are told it is.
