Who should be the Senate Majority Leader?
Edited on Wed Oct-07-09 02:16 PM by Ardent15
Harry Reid, in my opinion, is a spineless waste of a Senate seat.

These are my candidates

John Kerry
Jim Webb
Russ Feingold
Sherrod Brown
Maria Cantwell
Barbara Boxer
Barbara Mikulski
Richard Drubin
Jack Reed
Sheldon Whitehouse

Any others to add to the list? This is who we want the Majority Leader to be.

27. Reid is very compromised to the special interests. He loves lobbyists and happily says so.
I would be happy to show Reid the door, and personally shove him out myself.

5. I don't think Reid is "a spineless waste" as the OP suggests, but...
I do think that the majority leader position would be better filled by someone who hails from a safer seat.

19. That's what we need: A leader in a position of greater electoral safety. . .
Reid has to play to the peanut gallery too often. We'd be better served by a leadership electorally confident in the Party's positions, with the home support needed to move the agenda forward.

36. Of the original four or five in your OP, I'd go with Reed.
He's from a bulletproof Democratic state, he's got a great voting record, and he's got the sort of background that it's tough for the GOP to slime without looking like assholes -- career military, religious, etc.

He has great credentials and as you said, is impervious to Republican election threats.

My thoughts exactly. Should be someone with at least a 15+ advantage so that they aren't having to bow to the Republicans every few years to keep their seat.

Barbara Boxer is smart, honest, courageous and hard working. Boxer doesn't take crap from anyone.
That is the kind of person I would like to see leading our Senate Democrats to get some important things done for the American people.

30. That would be like putting Joe Liberman in that spot. Have you checked Feinstein's voting record
over the last two years? It's a very shameful republican record.

Feinstein would be a disaster - may as well formally hand over the Senate to the military/industrial complex, and the National Chamber of Commerce.

38. Really?
A freshman Senator with little to no experience?
So he's getting a little airplay and throwing some soundbites out there...
But a brand new Senator? He's MY senator, would look great for my state, but no way.

35. Reid because that's who the caucus picked
We have no direct control over who they pick. We do have control over who supported Reid in congress.

Which senators should be replaced because they supported Reid?

Have you let your senator know who you want? It probably can't hurt to let them know that (but it probably won't help either).

44. I think Kerry would be the best as he is very very competent over a huge range of disciplines
Edited on Wed Oct-07-09 05:20 PM by karynnj
I noticed several years ago that he was the only Senator in either party to be on both Senate Foreign Relations and Finance - two committees that have a steep learning curve on the issues overseen. Also, in spite of slurs from the right and from a wing of the Democratic party, he is articulate, eloquent and persuasive enough that he won the nomination in 2004 - even though in November 2003, he didn't have the most party support (Dean had the moost pledged delegates and Gore and Harkin, Clark had the Clintons), the most money (Dean raised $40 million in the 4th qtr of 2003), or most media support (Dean, Edwards and Clark all had strong media supporters - Kerry didn't).

The only reason that I hesitate is that he is an incredible chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He might well become one of the best in history. There is an energy, a depth and a creativity not there for decades.
