From the NY Times on Obama's Nobel
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 07:59 AM by crispini
“The question we have to ask is who has done the most in the previous year to enhance peace in the world,” Mr. Jagland said. “And who has done more than Barack Obama?”

He compared the selection of Mr. Obama with the award in 1971 to the then West German Chancellor Willy Brandt for his “Ostpolitik” policy of reconciliation with communist eastern Europe.

“Brandt hadn’t achieved much when he got the prize, but a process had started that ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall,” said Mr. Jagland. “The same thing is true of the prize to Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990, for launching perestroika. One can say that Barack Obama is trying to change the world, just as those two personalities changed Europe.”

“We have to get the world on the right track again,” he said. Without referring specifically to the Bush era, he continued: “Look at the level of confrontation we had just a few years ago. Now we get a man who is not only willing but probably able to open dialogue and strengthen international institutions.”

I thought than put it very well.

1. I hope the idiots that complain about Afghanistan and Iraq can comprehend this
but I really don't think they will. They'll continue to act like petulant immature children.

19. It think it would help Obama's cause if
he were considered the actual leader in this country on these issues. He is the leader of the country but it's not clear he is the leader of the anti-war movement or say global warming. It's sort of odd. He certainly spoke out about these things and nuclear disarmament. But the reaction of the press and public has been luke warm at best. Clearly these messages have been much more warmly and FORCEFULLY received outside this country than within. It's sort of odd the US president talks about eliminating nuclear weapons and it's basically not even a 1 day news cycle event. More Americans know where Obama stands on getting arrested for breaking into your own home than they do about his stance on nuclear arms. Perhaps Bush has really disabled the US presidency in the US. The presidents pick of dog is more widely known and cared about within the country than his speech to the UN.

6. They'll just poo-poo it as the "liberal" NY Times
but it's worth using anyway.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/10/world/10nobel.html?pagewanted=2&hp

Of course, it's a representative from Nobel committee that's saying this, not the Times, but they never let facts get in the way of their ignorance.

“Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics,” the committee wrote. “Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play.”

Interviewed later in the Nobel Committee’s wood-paneled meeting room, surrounded by photographs of past winners, Mr. Jagland brushed aside concerns expressed by some critics that Mr. Obama remains untested.

“The question we have to ask is who has done the most in the previous year to enhance peace in the world,” Mr. Jagland said. “And who has done more than Barack Obama?”

14. At first I was shocked by how many seemed unable to grasp the reason...
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 11:07 AM by redqueen
but then I realized that for many, the reason was immaterial. Just as with most Republicans, it's just reflexive bile... no rational thought required.

Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 11:10 AM by RetroLounge
1) compare them to republicans
2) call them bitter (reflexive bile)
3) Call them stupid (no rational thought)

then you and all your cheerleader friends can pat each other on the back...

Oh, and then run around using the unrec funtion after complaining about it just days before...

Congrats...

20. Isn't it fun to call anyone who disagrees with YOU a "cheerleader"?
Anyone who automatically labels people they disagree with as "cheerleaders" is not a person who is willing to engage in constructive dialogue or debate.

I could just as easily call you a "cheerleader" for anti-Obama crap. But that would be stupid, now wouldn't it?

If I did call you a cheerleader, you would claim I was dismissing any opposition, etc.

26. I agree with you in supporting all of those things
I also think it's inevitable that if something is being done now, something else will have to wait. And of course, the question is, which things? No matter what, someone will be upset that their particular cause did not come "first."

Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 01:31 PM by NYC Liberal
Obama himself has said he takes this as a "call to action" rather than an award that he deserves. If it encourages him to keep working and to do even more, I say it's a good thing.

24. I just don't get it.
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 12:37 PM by redqueen
I mean, I get it if it's coming from freepers... that makes sense. But here? Really?

The award isn't for past achievement... it's for promoting peace, disarmament and fraternity between nations... people seem to want to focus on their dissatisfaction with Iraq & Afghanistan policy and just ignore the blatantly obvious effect he's had on international relations.
