The Nobel is Great, but the Press Release is Even Better
By: Peterr Friday October 9, 2009 6:00 am

Nobel PrizeThe prize itself is one thing, but in four brief paragraphs, the Nobel Committee draws some stark contrasts between Obama and . . . how to put this? . . . other recent leaders on the world stage.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Diplomacy? Cooperation between peoples?

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Multilateral diplomacy? Dialogue and negotiations? There's even a nod to previous winners Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

As opposed to those who lead on the basis of their own narrow twisted visions of the world.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

I can almost hear the screaming from Dick Cheney and the neocons as they get the news.

6. I can
This is total nonsense. The ONLY thing he's done for peace is talk, talk, talk - with absolutely nothing to show for it.

Meanwhile, the Predator drones he commands still make their daily flights.

This has gone overboard into personality cultism, and it is not healthy at all.

14. Yeah
Can be summed up in one word: "hope" - as in they hope he will be what they want him to be.

The recurring theme with this President appears to be that zero accomplishments is OK because he sounds good doing nothing.

When you keep in mind that the nomination had to have been submitted by Feb 1st - a mere 11 days after the inauguration - this smells like a load of rotten fish. None of the things cited in the press release had occurred by that date - so why was he even nominated?

21. as opposed to the "bring em on" talkers
Obama has earned (not just as president) the respect of the global world, because he has an open mind and prefers to engage his adversaries rather then insult them.

I would add - those are LIBERAL ideals and although I believe much needs to be done, I applaud Obama and the Nobel Committee for recognizing this significant change in tone.

20. So you disagree with:
1. the committee attaching a special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons

2. the fact that Obama has created a new climate in international politics

3. Obama's use of multilateral diplomacy, dialogue and negotiations

4. the USA playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting.

5. democracy and human rights being strengthened

6. the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population

13. Or here on DU?
I am truly saddened by anyone who would try and diminish this great honor.

Can they NOT READ why the Nobel committee deemed him worthy?

I would think that for one day, they could put pettiness aside---at least HERE on DU.

I guess I expect more from people who come here to post.

7. In other words, the rest of the world is giving us another
chance. Pretty magnanimous considering what we have foisted on the planet in the recent past. I salute the committee and hope we can live up to their expectations.

15. On the local news they claimed it was for his Middle East peace efforts.
And then said how inappropriate it was given how his goals haven't been met.
