But it seems plenty of time to earn a Nobel Peace prize. Despite the fact nothing has been done to further peace in any concrete way.

1. someone on C-span listed all the things
that are still wrong with the world, as if Obama has been deficient because he hadn't fixed it all yet! So didn't deserve the Prize. Talk about stupid.

33. *sigh*... let's try brute force.
2.The Prize, in other words, is not only for past achievement, although that is the most important criterion. The committee also takes the possible positive effects of its choices into account. Among the reasons for adding this as a criterion is the obvious point that Nobel wanted the Prize to have political effects. Awarding a Peace Prize is, to put it bluntly, a political act – which is also the reason why the choices so often stir up controversy.

3.The mention in the will of the "abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the holding and promotion of peace congresses" reflects the period in which the will was written. The approach today is to see it as pointing to general disarmament and the dissemination of the concept of peace. The most important provision, however, is contained in the term "fraternity between nations." This general and open provision has provided a basis for the wide definition of peace-related work which the committee has applied right from the start.

There... try reading that a few times, and see if it starts to sink in.

Best of luck.

Just said I didn't personally think he's worthy of it. And I don't buy into the success of the "Nobel Philosopy" of anticipatory political influence. See it's the: "Awarding a Peace Prize is, to put it bluntly, a political act – which is also the reason why the choices so often stir up controversy." which I have the a lot of my problem with.

He didn't ask for the award, was gracious in his acceptance, and those that want to jump up onstage and try to interrupt his honor are doing as much as Kanye West did to Taylor Swift and looking just as badly.

Just my 2 cents.

It is generally considered a positive for peace if you can establish or promote democracy anywhere in the world where it is lacking. After 8 years of an illegal fascist regime in the United States Obama's miraculous win (considering all the voter suppression - digital and otherwise, being done by Corp Lobbyist Party) over the fascist Corporate Lobbyist Party this is considered a big step forward for democracy in America and therefor in the world.

I'm happy there is much gnashing of teeth in fascist circles.

66. Just think about the fact that EIGHT YEARS AGO almost to the day the President of the
United States was already advocating for invading one country and secretly planning to invade another.

This President is currently reducing troop levels in Iraq (no, not as quickly as I hoped for, but reducing them) and he has put the brakes on the screaming, pedal-to-the-metal Military-Industrial-Congressional-Corporate complex's attempt to force him to ramp up operations in Vietghanistan. We don't yet know how that will turn out, but I'm betting that this Nobel Peace Prize will give him even more pause in doing the bidding of the Hawks without trying to come up with a better approach.

I see this as the Nobel Committee using their BULLY PULPIT to influence future decisions by the President and to reward his not-insubstantial efforts to reinstate diplomacy as our first line of engagement.

Now I'm hoping that President Obama will use his BULLY PULPIT to explain how the United States must disengage militarily from the Middle East.

I think this was a good decision that will positively affect the United States and the world.
