EVERY woman I know has dealt with that paternalistic shit. I've been there. Harry, FUCK YOU. You're lucky she didn't cut off your balls on camera.

1. I know. THAT'S what she was making eyebrows about... Reid
put his hand on her shoulder and moved away from the mic.

Watch it again. That's what happened.

2. I heard that was some kind of Senate "move" meaning "I pwn you"
I've seen Harry pull that move before, and I think that's when that particular move was discussed.

Or, it could be a Reid thing. Maybe he's just an asshole.

Time to send Reid to former Senator status. I think he might be going too. Nevada is becoming depressed and he can't count on all that casino money anymore to keep him in office any more. Hopefully Democrats have someone less bought and paid for to run against him in the primaries.

37. Yes, it is.
But when done to a woman it has additional meaning. And when done to a member of the other congressional branch is has additional meaning. And when that member of the other congressional branch it the leader of that branch it has additional meaning.

When she moved away, she DID swat his peepee.

Face it, Reid is a lightweight.

5. Many of my (male) bosses felt it necessary to place a hand on my
shoulder or on my back while talking to me -- as though there was some aspect of Vulcan Mind Meld in transmission of his message.

How many, many times I wanted to punch one of those guys in the snout.

I thought Nancy showed REMARKABLE restraint -- if I'd been in her position, I think I would have slapped his hand away (the "shoo" you give an outhouse fly).

6. Hey, Harry Reid! How many fucking times do you have to be told?!
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 03:28 PM by TexasObserver
God dammit, this isn't the first time either!

I wish she would learn how to turn, grab his hand, and force him to the ground with one easy turn of her wrist. I'd love to see her take him to his knee like that just once.

If they have to tie his left hand to his leg to keep him from doing that, they should do so.

Seriously, he needs his ass kicked for that, preferably by Jim Webb.

Guys, keep your hands off the women in the workplace. I'm a guy, and it has always creeped me out when guys do that. I know we sometimes touch each other like that, but even then, there are subtle messages of rank that are communicated by such touchings, and when the persons are of different genders and the same rank, it's demeaning to women. Why? History, that's why.

A saying of my Irish mother whenever we expressed righteous anger and/or general levity - watch out or someone will think we're Irish! poor jack was always trying to be as cool as the WASPS. Bobby, on the other hand, was nowhere near that assimilated!

Mostly, for women, it was a depressing moment: the most powerful female poltician in America still has to put up with the SAME bullshit we women all have to put up with on a daily basis. When a guy gets intimidated by you at work, he tries to touch you, to own you, so he feels some sense of power.

33. I know... I am a guy, and it made me feel creepy.
and it's also a tactic that men use on men sometimes, believe it or not, but it's even more yucky when a cretin like Reid does it. It was apparent that she did not feel the sense of camaraderie he was trying to convey, and that the gesture was indeed a power play. I admire Nancy Pelosi a great deal. She is a strong and solid woman, and I love hearing her speak. People like her, Grayson, Wiener, and a few others, (one congresswoman from California, I forget her name) are a joy to the left. She'd make a damn good president!

32. I don't understand
Men do it to each other all the time. It definitely is a way of asserting oneself over another person. It might be a little heavy handed and patronizing, but I don't think it is sexist. Personally, I like my personal space, so I don't get close enough to my bosses (both female) to touch me.

Many men, in a cordial but business setting, would never think of hugging a man but will hug a woman. In any business setting, many men will put a hand on a woman's shoulder or on a woman's back. Rarely, would they think of doing the same with a man.
