Ten thousand unemployed apply for 90 jobs in Louisville, Kentucky
Reflecting the increasingly desperate economic situation faced by millions, this week 10,000 unemployed workers applied for 90 jobs at a Louisville, Kentucky, General Electric (GE) plant.

The enormous response came within the space of just three days. GE had announced its intentions to add a second shift to its plant manufacturing washing machines in Appliance Park last Friday and began accepting applications on Monday. An earlier announcement by the GE plant calling for 13 maintenance workers who would receive $23 per hour drew 700 applicants.

The GE jobs promised a mere $13 per hour, plus benefits including dental coverage and eye care. The same jobs had previously paid $19 per hour until the decision by the IUE-CWA Local 761 to accept concessions in May, which included cutting wages for new workers and future hires.

Unemployment in Kentucky reached 11.1 percent in August. A total of 3,200 manufacturing jobs were lost in the state in the same month. Over the year ending in August, some 35,300 manufacturing jobs were lost in Kentucky.

1. I looked at a nearby JC district's job board today.
There is exactly 1 (one) opening for faculty of any kind.

2. It's a testament to Louisville's leaders' persistence that that plant is still open today
SOOO many times we all thought that Appliance Park was going to turn into another urban ghost town. Stretching for about a mile along Fegenbush Ln.

My Dad retired from there after about 30 years' service. Started off working the lines but went to school for computer operations and moved to the computer room and worked 2nd shift my entire childhood (and then some).

Last year's move by GE to sell off the appliance division put further fears into the city that Appliance Park was going to be gone for good but yet it's still there.

The two Ford plants have cut back (my brother-in-law having been victim KTP's cutbacks)

Those mfg jobs are being replaced with corporate-type jobs at Yum! Brands and Humana's increased hiring of clerical staff to handle its increased Medicare business (largely due to Medicare Part D)

3. BTW, I left Louisville for Orlando back in May after having been unemployed for nearly 4 months
Lost my programming job when I was replaced by a mfg company's staff in Costa Rica.

I've been keeping an eye on jobs back there and, since May, I've only seen *3* positions open up that matched my skillset enough.

6. Just a note: $13 + bennies is a decent wage in the South.
Cost of living is lower down here.

I wouldn't categorize it as "mere."
