the truth of europe and drugs in Europe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVxDNJ6RZQw

the reason why we don't go to church anymore
is that we in our opinion in full respect
believe that every war the last 2000 years
was related to religion
but this not a judgment

1. Funny. I believe that most wars were caused by capital letters and proper punctuation.
Thank you for not contributing to the problem.

Now that Stupid is out of office, you'll be welcome. Oh, you'll be treated like a criminal at the airport, but don't take it too personally. They treat us the same way and we all pretend it's keeping us safe.

The dollar is cheap these days and will go far here.

82. I wouldn't want any one poking up my six either!
I've often wondered why it was so easy to get Americans to capitulate to fear after 9/11. Many Americans like to pound their chests while ranting that "we're number one," but at the first sign of hostility on our soil, they were the ones willing to give up our civil rights for the "promise" of safety. You'd think for all the machismo exhibited by those types, they'd be a little more brave. Classic bully behavior. ~sigh.

In the meantime, enjoy the board!

a language is like riding a bike. You will quickly get the hang of it again. American English is so casual, people would typically write "You'll" rather than "you will."

hey - you don't have verbs at the end of your Flemish sentences!!

ook - 1985, not 1986. oops. how quickly we forget... :)

I never really studied writing in Nederlands, etc. but I did learn some of the language. I did formally study French but I rarely have the opportunity to use it here. Sometimes when I try to speak to someone in French I start to say things in Flemish. vreemd.

Hopelijk wil je hier angenaam mensen finden. Maar, pas op! Americans can be very touchy about how little they know about other places. :)

I want you to know that I just got you a donor star. You'll see it right next to your name.

This will allow you to do several things. You can get rid of the advertisements, and you can post a poll if you want, and you can play in the Groups.

I want you to feel welcome here, and this was my way of showing it. You will have it for a year, and then it will disappear unless you get another one.

Enjoy!

The buddy list is open to everyone, star or no star. Just click on the figure with the green cross, next to the name.

The groups are open to donors only. I belong to Photography, Poetry, and Writing.

If you click on "Lobby" at the top of the page, it will show you all the groups. You can choose which ones you want to post in.

I love buying stars! It was my pleasure.

This I hope will make belonging to DU a greater pleasure for you.

nikske? niksje? I'm hearing the Flemish words in my head but I don't always how to spell them.

I was told Nederlands has a structure - noun VERB (always second unless you have something like nog, maar, mischien, etc.) then the past participle at the end for past tense. If you use "omdat" all the verbs are loaded at the end of the sentence, as in Ik dink gedurig over Belgiê omdat ik genoeglijk tijd daar gehad. Ook, ik blijven en Belgié kuchen omdat mijn schoenzuster en koek is. Witloof met hesp, Kervilsoep, potaten croquettjes - maar ik kan niet paard eten.

thank you for helping me. It's pleasant to try to communicate in Nederlands. I wish I were more proficient.

33. American English has great slang
nailing can mean that you smacked someone down - that's what's meant in this case. you put someone in his/her place by noting the hatred of Jews in Europe, as well as so many other religious wars.

funny, huh. now that western Europe is what Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia (celice-wearing very conservative Catholic.. Opus Dei Catholic) calls "post-Christian," it is not a continent ravaged by war.

funny, huh, that America's self-identified conservative Christians are the biggest war mongers in this nation.

oh, and "nailing" can also mean neuken.

54. We have some major idiots here
And they have tried to dumb down all of America's education system. But, no, not all places are toxic waste sites of stupidity in the U.S. We have a big mix of people. Some are stupid by choice, some by lack of access, and some people are not stupid at all, but simply isolated and fed a lot of propaganda... the news programs in the U.S. are incredibly conservative. What people think of as liberal here is often considered "Catholic Party" in Belgium.

Fox News would be the station for Vlaamse Bloc, if it were here. Republicans are the equivalent of Vlaamse Bloc and they are getting much worse about their racial hatred since Obama was elected - or, rather, they are more open about it.

There are many well-educated people in the U.S. The universities in the U.S. still have the top graduate programs in the world in many, many areas. I met my ex-husband because he came to the U.S. to get his PhD. The high school programs in Belgium are much more rigorous than here. If you came to the U.S. to study with a high school bac from Belgium, you would receive credit for many first year classes that students take as college freshmen. My ex-husband's licentiate program in Belgium gave him the equivalent of a master's degree here (here it is batchelors, masters, PhD). In Belgium if I remember correctly, it is licentiate and PhD.

In general, the U.S. has a much more anti-intellectual attitude than in Belgium. Teachers in Belgium get much more respect and better pay than here - but they're also better educated, overall. People at the greengrocer on a shopping street in Belgium are generally better educated than many college graduates here. They speak English, know more about other countries...

One big reason for the difference is that you have to earn a position at a university in Belgium and here you can go to college if you have the money - not every college, but you can find a college to attend if you can pay for it. Universities here finance themselves by research and by undergraduates (but no one admits this last part.) There is no "sliding fee" based upon income that determines how much you pay to attend school here. Everyone pays the same amount for basic fees.

One big problem with education in America, which no one, again, wants to admit is that sports are located in high schools rather than sports clubs. So the people with status in high school are, too often, the people who excel at American football rather than languages or math. If American high schools took sports out of the schools and put it in clubs, students would be better off. But this will not happen anytime soon, if at all, because too many people use their children's sports events as their weekend entertainment.

One big problem with education here is that poor people are not given the help they need to rise out of poverty through education, even tho that was a goal in the past and was a very successful way to break cycles of poverty. But racist white people ran from desegregated schools and the middle class in America is afraid, because there is no decent social safety net, that they will not help to lift someone up but will be pulled down themselves. Rather than align with others who would benefit, just as the middle class would, by forcing tax increases on the very wealthy, the middle class pretends they don't get government hand outs, even tho they have tax breaks for buying a house and for education and for putting money in retirement funds when they're paid.

I would prefer to live in Europe, honestly, but that's not too likely so I try to carve out a place for myself here.

(oh yeah, when I lived in Belgium, my son was 3. he got a lego stuck in his ear and the doctor refused to take a payment because he didn't want to have to deal with American insurance. If we'd had the same situation in the U.S. my son would still be walking around with that lego in his ear... )

88. Not everywhere
In fact, in most places, evolution is taught. Only the far right wing is against it. They just get all of the media attention.

47. oh yeah, one clarification
when "nail" is used as a verb, as in "neuken" it takes an object - As in, "I nailed that hot guy at the bar last night."

except, I really didn't, I'm just saying that as an example. ahem.

and usually that term is gendered in English. few if any females would talk about "nailing" a guy. and if a guy says it, it's bragging to his friends in a way that indicates he's not too interested in the female otherwise. but the term sort of goes with anatomy.

...but:

Didn't Hitler tell people to be against the Jews because he convinced them that they were taking all the power in Germany (and the world)? That's not religion. Don't forget that Jews were not Hitlers only targets either. Gypsies suffered quite a bit as well as some other people groups under the Nazi's if memory serves me correctly.
Also...the Hutu's and Tutsi's is about class warfare caused by selective separation on the part of the occupiers of their country in the past. Also not religious.

51. yes but
now hitler needed a common enemy the jews // look if you attack people because they have another color it is racist
now if you attack somebody who has another religion, and only based on that because
real jews: are never been a problem in a civilization they work and are not causing troubles
no jew is unemployed in belgium and no jew is in prison

do you really believe that the jews had the power in germany ... no they just needed a common enemy who was
rich and nobody would defend them ...
now thats true but on the ss belt it clearly says meine ehre heis trouw
hutu's an tutsi's have also a different religion

52. I didn't say I believed Hitler's BS about Jews having power...
...but that doesn't mean he singled out Jews for their religion. A common enemy, sure, but if he used a pretense of imagined power to get people riled up, it's not about religion.

As for the Hutu's and Tutsi's...the fact that they have different beliefs is not in and of itself an indicator that that difference is causing their problems. The Hutu's public statements leading up to the genocide indicated that their people were in danger of being enslaved by the Tutsi, this was the Hutu Power stance. All evidence points to this being a purely ethnic event. Not religion, but power struggles led to that disaster.

...(I admit to not knowing much about the Romanovs or William stuff) but you said "all" and that's what I take issue with. You can make a case for WWII (a weak one by my standards) but certainly not for the Rwandan genocide and I'm certain there are other examples of non-religious based conflicts as well.

Anyway, I'm glad we could come to an agreement. Good luck with your english studies and welcome to DU!

53. you may have noticed, mr. Red herring religious basher
that I restricted myself to WWI and WWII which is enough to debunk your most ridiculous ALL claim.

Yes, Judaism is a religion, but if your point is that nihilistic nazis attempted genocide against a group of believers, then that is hard to pin the blame on religion, nicht wahr?

67. Europe had a long history of persecution of Jews
that went back to the middle ages at least. This persecution was based upon their religion. The reason there were so many Jews in Poland by the time of Hitler was because Poland provided sanctuary for Jews who were persecuted in Spain and other parts of western Europe during the Inquisition. Poland allowed Jews to immigrate because of the ruler's Jewish mistress, or so the story goes.

Hitler's troops had the phrase "Got mit uns" on their belt buckles. Hitler claimed he was saving Germany from the godless Bolsheviks and socialists. Jews were identified with socialism and Bolshevism. So Hitler's call to remove Jews from Europe was a conflation of Jewishness and socialism - but Jewishness was also identified as "not Christian."

Of course there were many, many reasons for WWII but it is not credible to say that religion, as in Jewishness defined as Judaism, had no bearing on the holocaust. of course it did. Even tho secular Jews were just as persecuted - their Jewishness and non-Christian identity made them "the other."

You would have to ignore centuries of the divine right of Kings, etc. in Europe to claim that religion had no bearing on wars there -- or on the American Revolution, for that matter. The small percentage of American who favored revolution, initially, were the well educated and well off - and didn't buy the b.s. that the king could rule as he chose simply because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. - just like the initial phases of the French Revolution. The French Revolution went beyond the middle class elite, tho, and that is where the Terror came from. The French Revolution during the terror was as much of a reaction against the merger of church and state as it was any call to liberty, equality and fraternity. During the French Revolution, one chief target of the Jacobins was the church because they held so much wealth, refused to help the poor, and aligned themselves with the aristocrats and royalty.

Of course, causes of any major era are more complex than one thing. However, religion is one of the best ways to get people to do stupid things, things that are against their self-interest, and things that hurt others because the fear of god is a powerful motivator for inhumanity.

39. Welcome to DU.
I disagree about the wars being caused by religion. I think religion is used as a justification for wars that are caused by territorial and economic conflicts. Religion is just an excuse, a way to "sell" the war to a reluctant public.
