Dr Vanessa Kerry is getting married today - here's a fantastic NYT article
Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 03:06 PM by karynnj

When Dr. Vanessa Bradford Kerry and Dr. Brian Vala Nahed were making plans to marry, she received a sketch of a wedding dress done by her father.

“He drew us a sketch of what he thought I should wear on my big day, and until this day, we have no idea what it was,” said Dr. Kerry, laughing. “Though my father is a busy man, he has been very generous with time spent helping us plan our wedding. It’s really just been the three of us, and we have had a great time putting it all together.”
<snip>
It is difficult enough to start a relationship in a hospital,” Dr. Nahed said. “And Vanessa was going through a tough time with her mom being sick. But we kept getting closer, I think, because each of us had an intellectual curiosity about the other. I found her to be unbelievably witty, and she was sort of challenging at the same time. I connected with her in a way that I had never connected with a woman before.”

They became engaged in May 2008. Dr. Kerry described her stepparents, her sister, Alexandra, and her in-laws as being “part of an incredible family effort to plan this wedding.”

There is a lot more at the link, including a picture of the couple. It was always nice to see Vanessa Kerry and her dad in coverage of his campaigns, she always seemed very much like him.

Kerry was so artistic and creative in that respect?:)

Wonder where Dr. Brian Vala Nahed's heritage is from?

Thanks, karyn, I like love stories especially people I care about whether I know them or not.

9. You could be right - I likely should not have answered as I don't know
As I said, I was just going by the first names. Back in the 1980s, I had a fantastic officemate, who was Iranian - so I "met" many of her friends, many of whom were Iranian and especially "Reza" sounded Iranian.

Maybe some Iranians, Indians, or any other ethnic group that really knows might answer.

13. From the names, Iranian.

You made me curious, so I googled the names, and they all come as Iranian or at least from the Middle East.

4. I congratulate them both
I do wish, however, that the NYT would do wedding announcements for people from working class families too.

7. This is an article, rather than an announcement
and I think that there are likely more people interested in reading this because Vanessa Kerry and her sister were very prominent in the 2004 campaign. The fact is she is more newsworthy than the average bride, because many people know and respect her. (In fact, a Republican neighbor voted for Kerry. She was impressed with things he said, but was not convinced until teh Kerry daughters, in words and actions validated him.

10. Aww! :)
I think it's so sweet how involved JK was in the planning of the wedding (especially in her mother's absence). They seem very close. And she looks SO much like him. :)

Her and Brian make a really cute couple. Congrats and best wishes for the road ahead to them both! :loveya:

So cute! I bet they'd have a beautiful and highly intelligent child(ren) together, if that's what they choose, of course. But I bet JK would be saying "Slow down, we just got done with the wedding!" :P haha

19. Wisteria had this link - John Kerry, wedding planner? - on DU JK
(about half way down)
Kerry tasted cakes, helped pick music, and made sure there was no conflict with a Red Sox home games. Most importantly, he was there for a daughter, who lost her mom 3 years ago.

"Contrary to the experience of many brides-to-be, Vanessa said that planning her big day has been “so much fun,” thanks in large part to her father’s participation. “He’s solved so many problems,” she gushed, and his presence is “a great way to keep a sense of humor about an extraordinary industry that neither of us knew much about.

“We’ll both be standing there, trying to pick a tablecloth, which is neither of our fortes, and we’ll just start laughing.”

22. Guess who made sure there were chocolate chip cookies?
From the Boston Globe:

Wedding day approaches
Vanessa Kerry doesn't want to disclose too much about her wedding, which will be held tomorrow at a private home in Brookline. But she'll say this: There will be cookies. ‘‘My father has a chocolate-chip cookie addiction,'' Kerry said, of her dad, Senator John Kerry. ‘‘He has arranged for chocolate-chip cookies to be available for people all night long.'' Kerry is marrying fellow Mass General resident Brian Nahed, who's originally from Los Angeles. Nahed tells us that when he first met Kerry, he had no idea she was from a prominent political family. ‘‘I just didn't associate Ness with any of that,'' he said, adding that by the time he found out, ‘‘We were sort of smitten.'' After four years, Nahed says he's learned what it means to be a Kerry in Boston. ‘‘Things are very, sort of public,'' he said, laughing. ‘‘I'm from a super-private family.'' Kerry and Nahed, who are both 32, wouldn't disclose their guest list for tomorrow's affair, but said that everyone invited is someone they know well — no big names just for the sake of it. The couple tells us they're excited about their honeymoon. After all, it's not easy for two doctors to find quality time. ‘‘You get excited when you happen to see each other in the elevator,'' Kerry said.

27. Aww! Remember how in that one interview he said he's "the illegitimate son of the Cookie Monster"?
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 03:45 PM by ObamaKerryDem
Well I think this probably proves that! haha :P

So cute and I think all this is yet more evidence that JK is actually a really down to earth, relatable person, despite the "aloof", "snobby", or "elitist" caricature that was so unfairly given to him by the right and a lot of the press. An "elitist" might've just done the minimal things a father does in an occassion like this and let some expensive wedding planner do the rest. Not that there would be anything wrong with that either, lol, but I think it shows that he is more engaged than a lot of people would probably give him credit for.
