5. BNO News is fast, but...
The service is run by a 19-year old guy... He's usually quick and always accurate, but he did announce the recent shuttle launch 17 minutes prematurely. ;-)

I assume he's watching the live feed.

36. That's not how you train a dog, or a President.
Give him an "attaboy!" when he does good. If you never give him a treat until he saves Timmy from a well, he'll never get there.

Good on you, Mr. President, for supporting the legal right of citizens to serve in the military, without regard to their private inclinations. Next week, we'll work on support for gay marriage.

Let me clarify here:

I'm sick of words. I want action. When ACTION has been taken on DADT, then I will cheer. If/when the president comes out for FULL EQUALITY (not bullshit separate but equal crap), then I will say that he is good on equal rights.

into it. They use those issues, to the great detriment of women (choice) and the GLBT community to distract us from the fact that big money now owns America.

Besides, the Obamabots told me over and over that Obama could not do a single thing about discharges of gay troops under DADT; only Congress could.

So, both the Naderites and the Obama worshippers seem to have been either ignorant of the facts or lying through their teeth. Either way, it makes little sense to listen to members of either group without doing your own research and analysis.

"I will end 'don't ask-don't tell,'" Obama said at the annual dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay civil rights advocacy group.

He did not give a timetable for the repeal of the law passed by Congress in 1993 and signed by President Bill Clinton, who also promised to repeal the ban on homosexuals in the military but was blunted by opposition in the military and Congress.

Thought you were on to something, eh? Thought he might announce he is immediately halting further discharges with an executive order? HA.. That would take courage.. and "fierce advocacy"! More words.

23. Please let it be so!
There were a bunch of homophobic bigots today on the way to Trader Joe's up here in Washington protesting R71. I caught the attention of the couple of young kids who were holding the Pro-Gay Marriage signs (they were being jostled by the assholes), gave them a thumbs up and honked. I couldn't stop myself from giving the thumbs down to the H8ers, rolling down my car window and yelling, "Bigots'! On the way back, I didn't even look at them. I realized they don't even deserve acknowledgment. I saw some signs that said, 'Protect Our Children'. We need to protect our children, alright. From BIGOTS.

24. *** Obama's Comments ****
Fourteen years ago, the Democratic Party faced a test of leadership, and our party failed that test. We had an opportunity to be leaders on the World stage in eliminating discrimination against gay and lesbian service members, to recognize the patriotism and heroism of the hundreds of thousands of gay and lesbian citizens who have served our country. Instead, we bowed to fear and prejudice. We were told that American soldiers weren't ready to serve next to gay and lesbian comrades. We were told that our airmen, sailors and Marines would lose their "unit cohesion " if we implemented a policy of equality. And so, rather than embracing leadership and principle, we embraced Don't Ask, Don't Tell -- a policy that is antithetical to the values of honor and integrity that our military holds most dear. Patriotic gay and lesbian Americans are now told that they may serve their country only if they hide their true identities. They are forced to live a lie as the price of risking their lives for their country. Fourteen years later, the United States of America lags far behind. We lag behind our military allies, who are repudiating discrimination against lesbian and gay soldiers in ever increasing numbers -- in Great Britain, Canada, Israel, nearly every NATO member in Europe -- all with no impact upon military readiness and performance. And our politicians lag behind the American people, who now call for the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell in super-majority numbers. It is time for a change.

As president, I will work with Congress and place the weight of my administration behind enactment of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which will make nondiscrimination the official policy of the U.S. military. I will task the Defense Department and the senior command structure in every branch of the armed forces with developing an action plan for the implementation of a full repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. And I will direct my Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security to develop procedures for taking re-accession requests from those qualified service members who were separated from the armed forces under Don't Ask, Don't Tell and still want to serve their country. The eradication of this policy will require more than just eliminating one statute. It will require the implementation of anti-harassment policies and protocols for dealing with abusive or discriminatory behavior as we transition our armed forces away from a policy of discrimination. The military must be our active partners in developing those policies and protocols. That work should have started long ago. It will start when I take office.

America is ready to get rid of the Don't Ask, Dont Tell policy. All that is required is leadership.

( dated NOVEMBER 29, 2007)

Thought everyone would enjoy that from about 2 years ago

And, no, that is not the only way a President with both convictions and the courage of his convictions gets things done in D.C. Please see, for just two examples, Reply 56. And then, there was Lyndon Johnson and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, plus all the Great Society legislation.

67. I hope not, but he could say to them, "I'd have an easier time selling a troop
increase in Afghanistan to congress if you drop DADT." He's not promising anything, just saying they have to play ball with him if they want to stand any chance with congress. The military could walk away with no troops and the end of DADT.

I believe Obama wants to negotiate an end to the war, but he needs to negotiate from a position of strength. If he can neutralize the Taliban advance, he can then sue for peace. If we can retake Helmand province that would be a big blow to the Taliban. Helmand is the center of poppy production and profit for the Taliban.

BTW I worked in counter insurgency in the military. One of the best agents we had was gay. We knew it but really didn't care. He was a good spook, and a friendly guy. We were a tight-knit group. He was one of us, and that's all that mattered. Plus, he had access to the best weed. He had friends inside the Criminal Investigation Division that would let him sample some of the confiscated contraband. Being a good guy, he shared with his friend. His gifts helped us through some tough times like the Six Day War.

28. Now on BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8301120.stm

US President Barack Obama has said he will end the ban on gay people serving openly in the US military.

He said he would repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that allows gay people to serve in the military if they do not reveal their sexual orientation.

Mr Obama was speaking to America's largest gay group - the Human Rights Campaign - in Washington.

He had been criticised by some in the gay community for the lack of action on gay marriage and the military issue.

A big gay rights protest march is planned in Washington for Sunday.

52. Update: President to allow states..
..to opt-out of "Don't ask, don't tell" repeal. Strategy intended to get voters in "red" states to feel the negative effects of being prejudiced. Move hailed by Republicans.

54. When we see the Stop Loss order
and the Executive Order calling for an end of investigation into people's private lives, I'll believe President Obama actually means what he says.

Until then, until the White House actually pushes for a repeal of DADT -- which it has not done at all so far -- I will continue to maintain an attitude of 'wait and see.'

Because so far, as far as GLBT issues go, this administration has been "all talk, no walk."

56. He cannot repeal DADT. He can, however, suspend its operation--and could have done that in January.
Meanwhile, DADT has ended 300 miltiary careers since he took office, including the careers of mcuh-needed Arabic translators, to the detriment of the individuals, the military and national security.

Ford pardoned Nixon on day one. That may have been wrong, but it was very courageous. Carter granted amnesty before he walked Pennsylvania Avenue on Inauguration Day. That was very courageous.

It would not have taken near as much courage for Obama to have said, "Our military is now engaged in both Iraq and in Afghanistan. They are being sent back over and over. They are exhausted. Their exhaustion is not in the best interests of the United States. Under my authority under the Constitution and 10 USC 12305, I am suspending, until further orders of the Commander in Chief, all discharges due solely to the fact of sexual orientation." Or words to that effect.

Anyone who had argued with a statement along those lines would have been on thin ice.

The President cannot end the policy on his own, but he, as a group of military law experts has already confirmed, can sign an executive order preventing further discharges until Congress acts on a legislative proposal to repeal it. One would think a "fierce advocate" would have the boldness to take such a step, but we can always depend on the apologists to give him the political cover necessary to never have to take such a "risky" step. But then again, he isn't Bush, so that must be "good enough".
