Levin predicts Obama will succeed at overturning military ban on gays, rolls his eyes at Myers

Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) predicted Sunday that "Don't ask, don't tell" will be repealed as President Barack Obama promised Saturday.

“I will end ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell,'" Obama said Saturday night at a Human Rights Campaign dinner, without giving a timetable to end the ban on gays serving openly in the military.

"I think he will and he can," Levin said when asked by "Meet the Press" host David Gregory whether the president, who has been criticized by many in the gay community for lagging on gay-rights issues, will follow through on his pledge.

Former Joint Chiefs Chairman Richard Myers: ‘Gays Can Serve…They Just Can’t Serve Openly’

Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) expressed his support for Obama’s position, but emphasized that it needs “buy-in from the military.” Former Joint Chiefs Chairman Richard Myers struck a different note:

HOST: Do you have an opinion about whether it’s time?

MYERS: Well, I take some exception with what Senator Levin said because gays can serve in the military; they just can’t serve openly. And they do. And there’s lots of them. And we’re the beneficiary of all that.

Levin rolled his eyes after hearing Myers’ remark. Gen. Barry McCaffrey said “there’s no question it’s time to change the policy.” Asked for his thoughts, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) avoided making any clear statements. Watch it:

1. And there’s lots of them. And we’re the beneficiary of all that.
That's right. Give up your lives to us, but don't tell us about your lives because we don't want to hear it.

4. They serve. Lots of them serve. Everyone knows they serve.
So why the big fucking secret? Here's why: it gives COs more power over gay subordinates. The only people who support DADT are vindictive homophobes.

5. Does Myers even realize what he's saying?
"They" just can't serve openly....he has no idea of what the implications of this are.

"They" can't ever -- EVER -- speak of their partners. "They" have to live a lie, a complete LIE. "They" have to be stuffed back into a closet that's emotionally crippling. "They" have to live in fear that "they" will lose their jobs, their pensions, be thrown out in disgrace if "they" don't live the lie well enough.

This isn't about conduct - it's about forcing people to live and work in degrading, humiliating circumstances. It's asking a 21 year old to be weighed down with a host of emotional issues that will take years to deal with. And because the military is the largest employer in the country, it says that this treatment is somehow deserved - by "them".

What a fucker. Has he ever been forced to live like this?
