NFL Players React To The St. Louis Limbaughs...
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 07:14 AM by KharmaTrain
Rushbo may love football but the feeling isn't mutual:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4551010&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines

NFL Players executive director DeMaurice Smith on Saturday made a move to solidify the union against a bid by conservative talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh as part of a group that aims to purchase the St. Louis Rams.

In an e-mail to the union's executive committee on Saturday specifically addressing Limbaugh's bid, Smith said, "I've spoken to the Commissioner and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred."

Limbaugh and St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts are among six potential ownership groups that have discussed buying the Rams. League sources say the current sale price has ranged from $700-to-$750 million but that there did not appear to be an imminent transaction.
<snip>

At least seven NFL players have publicly opposed Limbaugh's interest in purchasing the Rams with Checketts. In Smith's communication Saturday with his executive committee, the union leader encouraged players to speak their mind on all matters, including Limbaugh's bid.

Here's hoping Donovan McNabb has a few choice words...

1. I think the right wing would support a predominantly white NFL team
HOwever, St. Louis won't and the team will get beat constantly and be the laughing stock of the league.

Limbaugh has zero chance of being an NFL owner.

3. Money Talks...
Especially in tough times...and Rushbo's money is as green as anyones. I agree that his owning the team would invoke a "reverse home discount"...players would want more money to play for him than for other teams. The problem is many sports francise, especially the weak sisters are hurting economically and the money may be too hard resist...players be damned.

Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 08:27 AM by madrchsod
read where the st louis players gave more to democrats than any team in the nfl.

but do`t worry. the owners of the rest of the teams won`t vote limpballs into the family.they may like what he has to say but they won`t let him marry their daughter...

8. I think you're right
The final nail in his coffin will be Obama. Many players in the league love him and Limpy pisses on him every day. It would be a little different if there was a Republican in the White House. The opposition would still be there, but now it is radicalized. The timing couldn't be worse, but arrogant white guys are always the last to know.

9. I Dunno About That...
St. Louis County and the adjoining Illinois Counties are very Democratic. And I'll bet if you took a poll not only of NFL teams but NBA and MLB players, the Democrats would get more of the donations. But that's not who sits in the owners suites.

I have a feeling Dan Rooney wouldn't be too happy to welcome Rushbo into the lodge, but how about an Art Model? Or even the McCaskeys...staunch rushpublicans. Thing could get interesting if another party came along that would make a similar bid but want to move the team...would the folks in St. Louis rally around a Rushbo to avoid losing another team?

28. Agreed.
The owners won't vote him into their club. Racism is bad for business. And the NFL is, first & foremost, a business.

10. I'd love to hear OxyRush's spin on all the reaction to his plans.

The players and the fans have loudly and overwhelmingly told that hatemonger pusbag to go to hell.

WTF was he ever thinking in the first place? No one wants to have anything to do with that asshole.

11. Money & Ego Have No Bounds...
The pussbag loves to show off and nothing says that more than being a sports team owner. Well maybe being a Senator, but Oxyboy would never win unless he moved to Oklahoma. Now he's not going to be the majority owner, he doesn't have the coin to buy the whole team...but enough to boast and brag and get to sit in a skybox and get his mug on teevee.

With the economy in the tank, sports teams have lost a lot of revenue...especially football. Corporates had to give up their PCL and endorsements, ticket and merchandise sales are down and swinging financing on these deals get tougher and tougher. A fresh fish...err money may be more welcome than people believe.

13. McNabb has already commented:
Earlier this week, Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb -- the player at the center of the controversy that ended Limbaugh's on-air role at ESPN after roughly a month -- made his own views known.

"If he's rewarded to buy them, congratulations to him," McNabb said, per the Daily News. "But I won't be in St. Louis anytime soon."

I must agree with Steven A. Smith, any player who says they will not play for a Limbaugh owned team are liars and hypocrites.

17. These are professional athletes...
How many MLB players refused to work with Marge Schott? I am quoting a professional athlete who is close to many NFL players. I didn't identify his race you did, and you denigrated his point simply because of his color...that's pretty racist.

18. If a player has integrity
, in any aspect of their lives, they would never consent to play for someone that has damaged this country as thoroughly as Limbaugh has. Limbaugh is the lowest most horrible example of a human being this country has. He recently advocated for a return to segregation on school buses.

I will never watch a Limbaugh owned football team.

22. Money Trumps All...
If someone waves a $20 million check in your face, few would turn it down...no matter the person's politics or anything else. If anything some may just take his money for that reason...creating a reverse hometown discount.

Bottom line is winning is all that matters in sports. People looked the other way to the antics of a Pete Rose or Curt Schilling cause their teams won. The same could be said of Rushbo...if he helps turn the team into a winner and is willing to spend to do it, politics and racism mean nothing...including players.

23. If Someone Who's NOT a Racist Waves a $20 Million Dollar Check In Your Face
a lot of players would take it.

There are 32 teams in the NFL. The Rams are far from the only game in town. A player good enough to play in the NFL is likely to be able to play on another team.

If some homophobe offered ME a job paying $20 million, and some NON-homophobe offered me an $18 million job, I'd damn sure go with the non-homophobe.

24. There's Your Reverse Hometown Discount...
The other factor in play here is that players rarely negotiate their deals...they have agents who do so. Most are kids who don't care much about politics, they just want to play. Or there are some kids who want a shot at the golden ring...a loser team could help them get playing time and exposure or just a job altogether.

Sure, there will be big name players who will bypass signing with a team with the dirtbag associated with it, but by no means will there be some flood of people avoiding the team. And, sadly, there may also be some players (white fundies) who are dittoheads who will want to play for the Limbaughs.

25. I'm Not Saying NO ONE Would Play For a Limbaugh-Owned Rams
I just think the number who'd refuse will be greater than you think.

I make far, far less than the league minimum, but I'd still not go to work for an employer that was an avowed homophobe, even if it doubled my salary.

26. Hopefully We'll Never Find Out.
I'm not much of a football fan...there's far more important things in this world worth dealing with. The upshot is that money talks far louder than you may want to realize. I can claim I'm a victim of Rushbo as he polluted the radio world I once lived in and specifically talk radio that was my specialty. I didn't think people would want to work in such repressive condition but work they do cause it's a chance to get a paycheck at what they love to do. They don't look at the signature on the check, they're working for themselves (or think they are...I did when I was in their situation).

Cheers...

The Limbaugh Whiteskins. I doubt many white players will want to play for him either.

The NFL will never let him in. He's too toxic.

20. Marge Schott Did Not Broadcast Her Bigotry Over a National Radio Show Daily.
There's a difference between being a racist and actively encouraging others to be racists. Players who would play for Marge Schott but not for Limbaugh are not hypocrites or liars. They are free to set their own standards of what they will tolerate.
