WILMINGTON, Del. - The Chicago Cubs baseball team filed for Chapter 11 protection Monday, a step that will allow its corporate parent to sell the team in an $845 million deal.

It comes as part of the Tribune Co.’s plans to sell the team, Wrigley Field and related properties to the family of billionaire Joe Ricketts, the founder of TD Ameritrade.

Tribune bought the Cubs in 1981 for $20.5 million from candy maker Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. It announced plans to sell the franchise in 2007, but got tripped up by the recession and the collapse of the credit markets.

2. Joe Rickett did a heck of a job--give him a position in the FED!
This clown probably caused almost as much harm as the other dopes on the bush/Obama economic team.

12. The Royals are just one team
They can't bring down Major League Baseball all by themselves, but lord knows they're trying.

16. Similar situation W/R/T the Phoenix Coyotes (NHL)
Every time I go to see my local team in Detroit, I must pay a subsidy for hockey in Phoenix, so that nobody there has to go to the games.

17. Hard to argue that MLBers (as a whole) are the best athletes in the world
Certainly there are some incredible individual players though.

19. It's one of the most profitable franchises in the game...
...it's the parent company that's in trouble, the bankruptcy of one of its subsidiaries is a formality, antecedent to breaking up the parent firm and selling off the parts.

The Cubs are going nowehere.

11. It seems like for years, that team practically had a license to print money!
The Tribune Co. had no motivation to put anything beyond a mediocre product on the field as the fans supported them in almost cult-like fashion year after year. They rarely if ever shelled out the money for the high-priced players as they knew that a team of scrubs would pack Wrigley Field day in and day out...

18. just dancing with the paperwork
the cubs are fine, they will be around for the next gazillion years and their stadium will remain an outdated dump--ok historic outdated dump. Their fans will be just as rude as ever. And the team will prove the while some teams can buy a championship-other teams can't no matter how much they overpend.
