The marriage between big business and religion: it goes back a century
It did not start with Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority. Ever since the rise of Communism in the early 20th century, businessmen enlisted preachers to preach against the evils of godless Communism and socialism.

In fact, many preachers spoke out against FDR and the New Deal as being evil, and the first step towards socialism. Many preached the "Prosperity Gospel", which says that God rewards the faithful with material wealth. There were also the preachers who sympathized with Fascism as an alternative to Communism.

So, in summary, religion and big business have been allies for a very long time.

1. Max Weber wrote a lot about this
Christian churches not only preached a prosperity gospel, but they served as business networking hubs too.
