Ralph Lauren is a World Class Jackass
http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/fashion/2009/10/14/2009-10-14_model_fired_for_being_too_fat.html

Ralph Lauren's clothing company fired the model whose body looked emaciated in a touched-up ad because she weighed too much, the woman told the Daily News Tuesday.

Filippa Hamilton - whose hips appeared slimmer than her head in the recent altered ad - said her contract was terminated in April because she was too heavy.

"They fired me because they said I was overweight and I couldn't fit in their clothes anymore," she said.

The 5-foot-10, 120-pound stunner was amazed to see her body digitally distorted for Ralph Lauren Blue Label.

----

Ralph Lauren should be ashamed of the harm he has inflicted on so many. What an asshole.

95. I very much doubt it.
I would think that in their contract with her that the photos become the property of RL and that they have the right to alter them and display them as they see fit. It would be a different situation if they had just taken photos of someone off the street and done that to them (could be some form of libel). However, she sold her image to them and I am sure their contract covers this sort of thing.

and we must watch our weight to make sure we don't suffer from any illness, but GOD, how much do you need to weight to be model? she weights 120 pounds for god's sake!! that's nothing for a woman her age and height!!..

and yes, Ralph Lauren should be ashamed of himself!!

21. At 5' 10"
120 lbs barely covers bones and skin! The camera does add a lot of weight, so imagine her 20 lbs lighter than the picture on the left, and that is closer to her actual size.

There is a lot more wrong with this story than meets they eye. I'd say I'm going to boycott this company, but I wouldn't be caught dead in those rags, seriously. Hideous. And hideously overpriced, too.

44. Yeah, I'm traumatized for her!
I can't imagine what that did to her head... skinny as all get out... and you have to work at that body 10 hours a day! Between the skin care and the exercise, it's a huge committment.

To do all that, to be so painfully thin, and to be told it's not enough... ugh.

105. 5' 10" and 120 is pretty skinny
Although my sister was at one time 5' 8" and 104 pounds (and I as a scrawny teenage male was 5' 11+" and 130 pounds.

But in my experience, very attractive women from 5' 6" to 5' 10" weigh between 130 and 160 pounds and those are women that nobody in their right mind thinks are fat.

8. Fashion designers have tunnel vision. They want the pictures to sell the clothes,
not the model. If the bodies are emaciated, the clothes simply hang on them which is what the designers want.

No wonder why models are bullemic, chain smokers (suppresses appetites), and anorexic. Yet it's interesting how Cindy Crawford held her own and was "allowed" to keep her figure.

75. Today's size 14 and size 14 from the 50s
are very different things due to vanity sizing.

She actually wasn't very big at all though she was curvy.

On this, the 41st anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death, Day to Day Countess of Culture Jessica Seigel talks to NPR's Alex Chadwick about a very special Marilyn Monroe fan she visited in Los Angeles, and the moment of glamour she experienced: She was allowed to try on some of the starlet's signature gowns.

"The myth that Marilyn would be considered near plus-size today has become a battle cry in the culture wars over female body image," Seigel says. "The truism that the world's sexiest woman would be fat by today's glamour standards has been repeated unattributed in hundreds of articles and books.

"Nice try, but image activists will have to come up with other arguments," Seigel says. "Marilyn Monroe was not even close to a size 12."

106. Whether 8/10 or 12/14... it's still a far cry from what is ideal these days
Sometimes when I watch TV, I actually cringe when I see the female actors in a full length shot. I know people who naturally have very tiny frames and it's generally easy to spot the difference between someone who is simply built that way and someone who is starving themselves to be that way. Natalie Portman is beautiful and has a petite frame but the fact that Christina Hendricks is considered well outside of the norm in Hollywood is quite frightening. I wish the people who run the fashion and entertainment industries would embrace women of all shapes and sizes equally. Whether they decide curves are "in" or stick thin is "in", they always wind up putting women at war with themselves and each other.

But aren't many fashion designers gay males? I think these guys want to make women look like teenage boys. No straight dude likes a woman who is bone skinny.

I think the EXCUSE that the designers use for these skinny models are that their thin frame allows the clothing to hang properly for display.

Actually no, that's fairly disgusting. I wonder if these same assholes think "You know, with a little photoshop work, I could turn Michaelangelo's David or DaVinci's Mona Lisa into a REAL work of art. David just needs to work on his abs a bit and if Mona Lisa lost a bit of the chunkiness on her face, I'd totally hit that." The fashion industry is totally disgusting and truly benefits almost no one. It's just sick to its core.

The waist is freakishly small, like a Barbie doll, but the hips to waist ration is way smaller than a Barbie doll. Then the head is too large for the body after they've rearranged her dimensions.

It's kind of creeps me out.

41. I grew up with a bulimic sister...
Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 03:13 PM by CoffeeCat
...and the pictures on the right look similar to what she looked like.

Ralph Lauren is creating a certain "look" that is simply unachievable unless the woman has an eating disorder or
some other health problem. That woman looks disgusting and sick.

Most women are not naturally emaciated like that. Yes, there are women who are naturally skinny like that--but that's a very
tiny fraction of the population. Most impressionable girls and young women see this picture and will try to emulate it.

The only way, for the vast majority--is to starve themselves or throw up what they eat.

My sister tried. She threw up everything she ate for a decade. Her body weight dropped to 95 pounds. Her electrolytes
were all screwed up and her teeth had to be pulled because the acid from the vomit destroyed them. She got her first pair
of dentures at age 29.

It's not Ralph Lauren's fault that my sister did this to herself. However, the fashion industry defines beauty as rail thin--and
for most women they cannot achieve that result without serious consequences to their health.

It's sad.

58. By the same token. . .
I think Ralph, himself, should not appear as he is, but more as a 13-year-old boy's ideal, seeing as that's the age group he seems to be marketing to. Far too old and baggy and by his own standards, morbidly obese. Yes, I should have taken more time to deal with the turkey neck and other imperfections (grey hair and that oversized forehead, Ralph? really?), but felt five minutes was already more of my time than the arse deserved.

Wait a minute. . . How can he even have live fashion shows if he can't duplicate his fantasy world IRL? Doesn't that demonstrate his crap can't look like it does in the catalogue?

60. The fashion industry is a joke... I'm glad that models are speaking out more often
I suspect the problem they have with Ms. Hamilton is that she has *gasp* breasts. They like to relegate the models with breasts to Victoria's Secret and SI Swimsuit Modeling... god forbid someone with breasts walk down a runway or appear in a magazine editorial.

76. The industry has learned nothing from models who died of eating disorders
Hila Elmalich died weighing less than 60 pounds;

Ana Carolina Reston, 5'7" and 88 pounds, died in 2006;

Luisel Ramos, 5'9" and 98 pounds, died in 2006. Her younger sister Eliana, also 5'9", died six months later.

And here is Ralph Lauren photoshopping a 120 lb. model to look more like women who have died, and continuing to put the pressure on girls who think that's the only acceptable or desirable way to look.

79. Excuse me please take note while you all excoriate Mr. Lauren
The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention

The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention is a community based Center for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer through new models of patient care, research, education and outreach designed to address the unique needs of the community. The Center, made possible by a generous gift from the Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation, is a partnership between Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and North General Hospital.

Located in East Harlem, New York, just one block from historic 125th Street, the Center features a warm, friendly environment where guests can count on personalized attention. Assisted by Polo Ralph Lauren designers, the space was created to inspire serenity and comfort. The Center features art representative of the African American and Latino experience.

Why did Ralph Lauren decide to help create a cancer center in Harlem?

It all started when Ralph Lauren met Dr. Harold Freeman, our medical director. Mr. Lauren had supported cancer research in the past, but after meeting with Dr. Freeman in 2001, he was inspired to take his involvement to another level. He was incredibly impressed with Dr. Freeman’s expertise and passion for making cancer screening and treatment available to all.

Dr. Freeman describes the historic meeting:

“Mr. Lauren didn’t say very much, but he quietly asked me a few questions. Afterward, he stood up, shook my hand and said, ‘I will help you.’ He looked in my eyes. He was very sincere. I had never met him before. It turned out he was very serious. I was asked to create a proposal with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and that plan has become the basis for the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention.”

The Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation was created for the purpose of providing support for philanthropic programs including, but not limited to, education, healthcare in medically under-served communities, the arts and community-based initiatives.

With a focus on breast cancer, Pink Pony supports programs for early diagnosis, education, treatment and research and is dedicated to bringing patient navigation and quality cancer care to medically underserved communities. Ten percent of proceeds from Pink Pony products benefits the Pink Pony Fund.Pink Pony is a worldwide philanthropic effort. In the United States, Pink Pony grant recipients include the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Breast Cancer Research Foundation in New York City, Women’s Cancer Research Institute at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, Prevención, Inc., and Nina Hyde Center, both in Washington, D.C.

Internationally, Pink Pony has supported the American Hospital of Paris, the United Kingdom’s Breast Cancer Haven and Cancer Research UK, National Breast Cancer Centre of Australia, Susan G. Komen of Germany, and the Japan Cancer Society.

MUCH of their work is done via grants and contributions to benefit those without health insurance. So while you all get pissed because a model may have (we only know HER side) lost her gig because she weigh more than a Dixie cup, his foundation has saved thousands.

Just a point for the legions of haters here.

108. I've heard it said
. . . that models--especially runway models--are expected to be nothing more than hangers for the clothes. It seems to me that the only thing stopping them from using 12-year-old boys are child labor laws, because they do seem to fill the bill better than women and all our annoying curves. :eyes:

I'd like to see ongoing appreciation for Dove and their "real women" campaign. I notice that's suddenly not as prominent as it once was and hope to hell they haven't caved and abandoned it. Having real women in ads selling everything from underwear to jeans to perfume and shampoo would certainly make me more likely to patronize those brands.

Ralph Lauren subsequently apologized for the image, saying "We have learned that we are responsible for the poor imaging and retouching that resulted in a very distorted image of a woman’s body,".

For over 42 years we have built a brand based on quality, integrity and a wholesome American lifestyle. Filippa Hamilton is a beautiful and healthy woman that we have worked closely with for over 6 years and we consider her an important part of our imaging and branding. We regret that our relationship has ended as a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with us. The image in question was mistakenly released and used in a department store in Japan and was not the approved image which ran in the U.S. We take full responsibility for allowing this image to run as this is completely inconsistent with our creative standards and brand values. This error has absolutely no connection to our relationship with Filippa Hamilton.

89. What does this mean?
""We have learned that we are responsible for the poor imaging and retouching that resulted in a very distorted image of a woman’s body,".

WTF? Was someone else responsible? Did they even have to investigate where the image came from? The imaging appears fine, it is the grotesque distortion of the woman's body that is disturbing.

"We regret that our relationship has ended as a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with us."

Did she fail at her obligation to starve herself and keep her body emaciated? Is that where she failed?

"The image in question was mistakenly released and used in a department store in Japan and was not the approved image which ran in the U.S."

So, I guess Lauren believes that the Japanese will be OK with his company's distorting images to present living skeletons as models for his clothing.

93. You as everyone else here, don't know anymore than what has been published
no one knows who distorted her image or OK'd it's use in Japan (Japan, a very twisted society when you start to peel back the layers of the onion), none of us now what is in her contract as she has been on the offensive the last couple of days and NONE of us know the real story behind her firing in April. But I guess waiting to find out all of the information isn't what the pitch fork and torches crowd wants here.

Your assumption is of course yours to make.
