Have you ever received a personal response from the WH? What's the secret
Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 07:12 PM by Mrs. Overall
to getting something into Obama's hands or at least into the hands of people close to him?

I just helped produce a literary journal that includes the poetry of two Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. The journal also includes the artwork of one of these veterans as well as her writing.

I know Obama is literary (he had poetry/fiction published as a college student) and I would LOVE for him to read this particular issue of the journal.

Does anyone know how I might be able to do this?

(You can pm me if you want.)

Thanks!!

1. I got on The WH List during the Obama campaign when my Native Unity news column

was monitored by the White House election campaign team. Obama appointed 8 Native Americans to serve on the team.

Pardon me, that was "transition team" checked my notes.

2. Got a reply from Barbara *!
Yep, have to admit it. Back when she and *Sr were WH residents, her shtick was promoting literacy.
A literacy group where I lived asked me to write a couple songs for their annual awards banquet (recognizing new readers). I put the songs on a cassette and mailed it to Mrs. *

I think the trick was in offering something that connected personally to her own interests. Anyway, I got back a typed note of thanks, but signed by the Babbster herself.

When I was a kid living on a remote Navy base, I got Jayne Mansfield's autograph at a USO show. Two days later I sold the autograph to my older brother for 50 cents.

When Babb's note got moldy, I put it in the compost bin.

Perhaps President Obama would be shown the work (stuff is always opened and screened of course)if it offers first hand observations on the reasons for being in or staying in those war zones.

Important to send it to him in any case I think.

4. Cool story about the babs!
Thanks for the inspiration! I will send a copy and a letter to the WH, but I'm just wondering if any DUers have any backdoor connections.

I love your story!

3. It's more a matter of luck and a very well-written
cover letter, than anything else. Much depends on the timing, and there's no way to figure that out.

You might consider sending it to someone who sees President Obama frequently and request that that person present it to the President if he/she finds it worthy. I'd think that would be more effective, since so much mail comes addressed to the President.

5. Yes, I was wondering about that--
I even thought of trying to send it to Michelle as well.

Perhaps someone connected with the NEA or the arts council...

Thanks for your input!

7. Perhaps someone connected to the military who sees the
President frequently would be better. The arts folks don't see him that often, but DoD people do.

It's a crapshoot, really. I mean, so much stuff goes in and out of the White House that it takes a really special effort to get something noticed. An offbeat approach, like I suggested, is probably your best shot.

I hope you succeed.
