care in this country can suck as well. My mother suffered from terrible abdominal pain for months and went from doctor to doctor - all who told her there was nothing wrong, Finally she couldn't take it anymore and went to the emergency room. She was admitted to the hospital, and it still took almost a week for the doctors to determine the cause - a small tumor in her intenstine. Once it was removed she was fine, but she suffered tremendous unnecessary agony in the interim.
This summer my dad was experiencing symptoms of dementia. I literally could not get him evaluated. Every doctor I called either wasn't taking new patients or couldn't see him for weeks or even months. Meantime he was deteriorating rapidly. I tried to get him into the UCLA geriatric psychiatric unit, but that proved impossible. There's a long waiting list and I had no clout. Unfortunately, he died of a heart attack before I could get him the mental health care he so desperately needed.
So while insurance reform is definitely a necessity, so is taking a hard look at the quality (or lack thereof) of the actual care. I'm sorry your wife has experienced so much difficulty. I hope she's feeling better.
