Woman Claims Flu Shot Gave Her Neurological Disorder
A 25-year-old woman is suffering from a neurological movement disorder, which she says is the result of a bad reaction to a flu shot, MyFoxDC reported.

Desiree Jennings developed severe side effects from the flu shot she received seven weeks ago, according to the Loudon Times-Mirror.

Before she received the shot, Jennings said she was very healthy and training for a half-marathon. Jennings also was an ambassador for the Washington Redskins, a training program to become a cheerleader.

...

Jennings’ physical therapist, who works at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland, said the woman has dystonia, a disorder where muscle contractions cause involuntary body jerks and repetitive movements.

"You realize your life is never going to come back the way it was," Jennings told the Times-Mirror. "My goal in life was to one day be a CEO. Now, I don’t know if I can ever return back to work."

1. She's 25 and training to be a cheerleader?
And then she's going to be a CEO?

It's not that I'm not being sympathetic, but it's an odd story.

2. Kooks abound, and are attracted to the story de jour.
Not to say that some people don't genuinely have bad reactions to vaccines or other medication, but it does tend to draw nutjobs.

9. It does seem like she is a little delusional
Maybe her reaction to the vaccine is imagined?

16. If so, she has plenty of company on DU.
Of course I'm just a "pharma giant shill", what do I know?

I'm not really giant, you know, I can still fit in the jeans I wore in high school.

Check out my reply (#6) and the amazingly arrogant responses to it.

Guess we can toss Desiree Jennings under the bus to whatever bizarre, Orwellian agenda is proceeding apace here... she'll have lots of company under there.

6. Seeing as how the H1N1 vaccine was not available
until this week, I don't think it played a role in Desiree Jenning's condition - she was vaccinated 7 weeks ago.

Seasonal flu shots have been out for a while. Article from KY on 9/2 noting flu shots already available"

33. I was responding to a specific poster, who said
said "I knew this was coming" and linked to a post he had made in another thread about the H1N1 vaccine, in which he said the H1N1 vaccine was "dangerous and untested" and "rushed to the market."

The fact that this woman has tragically developed a rare condition following her vaccination against the seasonal flu proves nothing at all about the H1N1 vaccine. (It also doesn't necessarily prove anything about whether the cause of her condition was the seasonal flu vaccination - but that is a different issue.)

If you follow the thread, all I was said was that this case is not linked to the H1N1 vaccination because the H1N1 vaccination could not have been the one she received 7 weeks ago when it was not yet available (and therefore does not support the point he made in another thread, and linked to in his 'I told you so' comment in this thread.)

4. until her entire medical history is laid bare, no one knows
she could have been taking medications that brought on the symptoms as well.

there are a lot of meds out there that have nasty side effects. In fact I just read about some gastric reflux med (Reglan) that causes Tardive Dyskinesia, which is not a desirable condition.

a good friend didn't know she had MS until she stressed herself out for a 5K and then the symptoms of MS set upon her like lightening. Symptom free today but she takes meds because of the MS.

5. Given that it was seven weeks ago, it had to have been a regular seasonal flu shot.
And, while significant reactions are relatively rare, they are known to occur. I find the article negligent in its omission of what kind of vaccination she received--and of any other useful information, for that matter. In the absence of such information, many people are going to assume that the woman had a swine flu shot. And for Fox News to feed anxieties about this flu is consistent with what I've read about Beck and others attempting to scare their audiences into avoiding swine flu vaccinations. If you don't want the shot, don't have one, and I get it that some DUers have chosen not to be vaccinated. That's fine. But for the media to intentionally mislead and frighten people with sensational stories that are devoid of critical facts is reprehensible.

Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 11:18 PM by earth mom
That's what many here on DU try to cover up and deny. But it's the truth.

I am so damn sick of the disinfo and bullshit that is spewed on every thread like this.

But you know, all I think of when it happens is: Karma.

Because you just can't put that much negative, mean and nasty energy and words out there without it coming back to bite you in the ass.

So Karma, pharma giant shills, Karma.

14. Where is all this hatred coming from? Did a vaccination eat your children?
Did a vaccine leave you at the altar?

Insult your mother?

Maybe karma is the reason you're so miserable and full of rage.

Think about it.

18. You have an odd definition of "often"
I know that adverse reactions can and do happen because my kid had one, and can't take some other shots because he's allergic to a major component. But adverse reactions beyond a little swelling at the injection site or a slight fever are quite uncommon with most regularly scheduled shots, and serious reactions are decidedly rare.

32. That depends on what you mean by "karma"
"Karma" meaning that actions one takes produce effects? That's not woo woo, that's cause and effect.

"Karma" meaning these actions will reverberate in some future life (insert here whatever bits of theology from the Rig Veda one wishes to add)? That's an unprovable statement. One can take a position on it as a matter of faith, but not as a matter of fact.

"Karma" meaning that everything that happens to oneself is the consequence of something you and only you set in motion? That's utter nonsense and one whopper of an illustration of the Just World Fallacy.

Given that I believe in karma (version one), I intend to get myself vaccinated.
