A Nebraska utility has reported a small fire at a nuclear power plant that was already shut down for refueling and maintenance. Nebraska Public Power District spokesman Mark Becker says the fire was put out in about five minutes at Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville in southeast Nebraska. No injuries were reported and the fire was not near any radioactive material. Becker says a welding accident started the blaze Monday, which was put out by a lone fire-watch person. Because it took more than 10 minutes for firefighters to verify the danger had passed, NPPD reported the incident to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The plant has been shut down for two weeks. Becker declined to say exactly when the plant will go online, but he says it should be operating by early November.

An overnight explosion at the Mitchell Power Plant in Marshall County caused some damage but, no injuries. According American Electric Power spokeswoman Carmen Pratti-Miller,a coal feeder located beneath a pile of coal exploded. Miller said they're currently investigating the cause of that explosion. She said there was damage to some equipment but no one was injured. The 2 a.m. incident did not cause any loss to the operations at the plant.

Well no it actually was a fire from a welding torch small enough that a single man with a fire extinguisher put it out.

However I am glad ensho pointed out that coal is far more dangerous and destructive than clean renewable nuclear power.

Of course very little research is being done on this because of the anti-nuke propaganda in the United States.

One of the worst long lived isotopes is Tc-99 with a half life of 211,000 years. However by bombarding Tc-99 with neutrons we can change it into Tc-100 which is very unstable. It has a half-life of 16 seconds. Yup 16 seconds.

So after
16 seconds - radioactive output is 50%
32 seconds - radioactive output is 25%
64 seconds - radioactive output is 12%
96 seconds - radioactive output is 6%
2 minutes - radioactive output is 3%
4 minutes - radioactive output is 0.1%
....
After a mere 1 hour (225 half lives of 16 seconds) virtually all of of the Tc-100 has decayed into non-radioactive Ru-100.
Only one part per 5.4x10^67 remains.



We can't transmute Sr-90 * Cs-137 but they have half lives of about 30 years (vs hundreds of thousands). In 200 years (much easier to plan for 200 years than 211,000 years) only roughly 1% remains. Sr-90 & Cs-137 waste can be managed much easier than the long half-life products.

Every single nuclear power plant PAYS the US govt to handle the waste. They are required to. The EPA collects 1/10th cent per KWH (roughly 3% of gross revenue) from every single kwh generated. The purpose of the money is for the govt to handle long term disposal of waste.

The govt collects the money and never collects the waste. The environmentalist would rather pretend nuclear power doesn't exist. A national transmutation, reprocessing, and deepcore store center likely would lead to a massive increase in nuclear power. It solve the unsolved issue. Better to block any attempt at a solution then claim a problem exists. We have been transmuting isotopes for 30 years now in labs. We have even turned lead into gold via nuclear transmutation.

I would like to see how many people get cancer linked to a Nuclear Power Plant or waste from one. I think you are talking out of your ass. You are more likely to drown in your bathtub TODAY than you are to come in contact with radioactive material from a Nuclear Power plant. The odds of you getting cancer from that material are infinitesimal.

Heavy metals, organics, radioactive isotopes...coal slag is fairly dangerous, actually, yet doesn't get a tenth of the attention that nuclear plants get.

Yeah, this is a shoot the messenger thing, right.

ensho is one of the most outspoken critics of nuclear power on this website, and posts like this are simply meant to play into nonsense fears and paranoia about it. Most people at DU read the headline and little else, and ensho knows that.

Believe all you want that this is just some "public service." There is an agenda behind it, and when there is, yes, I will attack the message and the messenger.

there is NEVER anything worth looking at in these posts. my only hope is that you are trying emphasize the security and safety of nuclear power through these 'event' posts.

i do love the comment shortly above mine that asks if you will post info about EVERY small welding torch fire. why are you are not posting ALL the OSHA reported injuries and violations and perhaps the sexual harassment complaints would be fun too...
