Fourth-Grader To Obama: Why Does Everyone Hate You?
Fourth-Grader To Obama: Why Does Everyone Hate You?
Rachel Slajda | October 15, 2009, 3:42PM

At a town hall event in New Orleans, President Obama took a question from a fourth-grader named Terrence who wanted to know, "Why does everyone hate you?"

"They're supposed to love you," he continued.

After the crowd swooned, Obama responded that the boy should take criticism of him with "a grain of salt."

"One party feels like they need to poke you, keep you on your toes," he said.

"When things are tough, you're gonna get some of the blame," Obama said. But, he added, "I'm a tough guy. Are you a tough guy? You look pretty tough."

8. Well, yeah. There's always an exception to the rule.
But, generally speaking, our leaders are complex in personality and action. They are not wholly evil or benevolent.

12. Yes and teaching a 4th grader to blindly love authority is not going to help anyone.

16. That's not even close to the what is necessarily the truth.
9 or 10 year olds have a very different view of the world, they are CHILDREN. My son had a starry eyed vision of Bush when he was that age and trust me there was no love lost between Bush and myself around our house.

17. Your kid learned from somewhere that loving Bush was a good thing.
A child at that age is not really capable of developing independent opinions.

3. I guess this boy's family only watches faux.snooz!
I think that most normal, rational people DO like President Obama, although some of them may disagree with his policies.

4. It's fairly common for the president to recieve a great deal of criticism
especially when things aren't going great (as now).

No doubt a touching moment, but fairly irrelevant. We aren't suppose to love the president. To insist that we do strikes me as orwellian.

The president is a politician, nothing more. A high ranking and powerful one granted, but still a politician. And he should be supported by individuals when he serves their best interests, and opposed when he doesn't. Love or hate shouldn't come in to it.

6. He responded to that little boy *Just Right*. .
"Don't worry about me, I can take it.." along with his great smile. I know the kid felt better after that.

spoon and fork, sprinkle on some parmesan cheese, then eat him in one big bite! :)
