"Illegal Alien" Halloween costume sparks ire
"Illegal Alien" Halloween costume sparks ire

(10-16) 17:11 PDT LOS ANGELES, (AP) --

A Southern California immigrant rights group has asked Target stores to stop selling an "illegal alien" Halloween costume it says is offensive to immigrants.

The costume, posted on Target's web site, features the mask of an alien with a green card and an orange jumpsuit with "illegal alien" written across the front.

Target spokesman Joshua Thomas says the company is removing the costume from the site after receiving several complaints.

He says the store never intended to sell the outfit but included it in its online offerings by mistake.

8. I for one say we ban pun-based costumes.
Puns are the lowest form of comedy.

9. Considering that our local Target is mostly patronized by hispanics, I think
they made a wise decision removing that item. Apparently, it never occurred to their buyers just how insensitive and inappropriate that costume is, so I can't appeal to their higher sense of social justice.

"Illegal Alien" is the fifth track in the 1983 album Genesis.......

12. I don't know? Should they? I don't listen to pop music but I understand

a lot of it is really misogynist and racist, which is one of the reasons I don't spend my money on it. I also have boycotted Target before this because of their employment practices and attempts to keep out unions. I find I don't need them. There are plenty of local mom and pop stores and nurseries to get what I used to buy from them, which was mostly gardening equipment and plants. I'm not saying Target should be forbidden to sell those items. I am saying they have the choice of not selling them whether for social justice or because it might hurt their bottom line. I like it when a business decides to become a part of the community and not another market to exploit. As a Latina I'm offended by that Halloween outfit and I commend them for removing the item from their stores even if it's only because they got complaints.

11. I thought they didn't want to be referred to as "illegal aliens" anyway?
They want to be known as "undocumented workers," so they look like there was just a paperwork mix up, instead of them illegally entering, working, and living in this country.

Target just needs to change the name of the costume, so they will be happy, that is all.

coined the term undocumented worker because it more accurately describes what they are. They crossed the border illegally, but they aren't illegal human beings, alien or not. I'm really curious how your ancestors got to Kansas. Perhaps they illegally entered Indian territory as well.

16. Well if you must know....
One side came from Prussia in the early 1900s, and Kansas was already a state. The other side settled in Kansas right after it became a state. Neither side had any part in negotiating with the Indians. Great Great Grand Pappy did go down south (not sure where) with his brother, and brought back a couple of brides, if I got the story right. Anyway, the name Ortiz was in the family tree somewhere... Nope, never bothered me, so I hate to burst your bubble.

Now, could you point out exactly when those South of today's U.S. border came up and joined the Plains Indians or had a free pass all over the current day United States, without having any problems with various Native Tribes across the current day United States? Advocates of open borders aren't exactly clear on that and how that all worked out for them back then.

Bottom line... We have laws on the books and have all along. Illegal immigrants illegally entered and stayed in this country. There is also probable cause that those here illegally have been committing document fraud as well along the way. You cannot change that, even though Corporate America would love you for it if you could. Perhaps you would prefer to have Mexico's illegal immigration laws, instead of the laws we have now. Would that make you happy?
