Elizabeth Warren: "Astonishing" that Big Banks Are Taking Taxpayer Money, Writing the Rules
Elizabeth Warren may be the American consumer's new best friend.

Warren, charged with overseeing the U.S. banking bailout (formally known as TARP), is pushing an agency that's devoted to looking out for individual Americans.

The proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency would set more transparent rules for financial institutions to ensure consumers get help in understanding terms of their loans and agreements. Banks, however, are opposing another regulator.

"The banks, big banks, always get what they want," says Warren, in the third part of her sitdown interview with Aaron Task at The Economist's Buttonwood gathering. "They have all the money, all the lobbyists. And boy is that's true on this one. There's just not a lobby on the other side."

Things would look so much better if Obama had appointed Warren head of the treasury instead of Geithner.

2. I think basically she has no power.
She has the authority to render non-binding opinions on how the TARP money is used. Beyond that, as far as I know, nada.

3. And she has constantly stated that Bernanke and Geithenr REFUSE to call her back.
Jsut as they refuse to call back the Senators that call them.

Something is very wrong in our nation.

6. she has a microphone, that's it. her job is to sound off if something's not right.
but she has no authority to do anything about it.

it's basically a "write a report" job.

that said, she's playing a helluva game with the cards she's been dealt.

4. The administration has to address this.
I agree that Warren would be a vastly better treasury head than Geithner.

If Warren is in charge of overseeing the bailout, she has to be given some tools to do that.

But as soon as the administration does anything Wall Street doesn't like, they'll lose their DOW 10,000.

8. If the administration is banking on political capital from the market rally..
then they've made an enormous mistake.

Presidents never get credit for equity rallies. Whoever told them they will gain popularity on the strength of the stock market was lying. The price of oil, low inflation, unemployment and the strength of the dollar are all more closely correlated to Presidential poll numbers.

7. Which is another way of saying - our elected officials are sell outs
They bow to money and ignore people and our votes.

Same shit, different day.

9. Has Ms. Warren been on the Daily Show recently?
How about 60 Minutes?

She needs a wider audience since she has no badge, no gun.
