Peace Isn't Just The Absence Of War
To those who complain that President Obama doesn't deserve the Nobel Peace Prize:

The moment Barack Obama took the oath of office, I, along with billions of my fellow earthlings, received a purifying dose of inner peace deep inside our hearts...

for never again would my blood pressure spike each time I heard "noocyoolur", "tehrrist" or "evildoer" uttered by President Doofus.

Never again would I suffer the embarrassment of having a President who thinks diplomacy is best displayed by offering foreign dignitaries a neck massage.

Never again would my stress level be so drastically elevated, with the fate of the world in the hands of an intellectually-challenged frat boy who took his orders from God.

Hell, just knowing that the rest of the world no longer despises America; that they actually like and respect our leader, gives me a warm feeling inside.....

I cannot think of a more deserving recipient.

1. Peace is not just the absence of war. But there is no peace when there is war.

Unrec'ed because your standards for winning the peace prize are quite low.

2. Peace Can Reside Within The Heart Of Each Individual
untouched, unaffected and independent of whatever is occurring in the external world.

The Nobel Prize Committee understands this. I understand this. You, obviously, do not....

3. They don't give out Nobel Peace prizes for inner peace...
They give it out for advancing communal peace.

On top of that, while Obama makes me feel better than before, he does not give me inner peace.

"Peace Can Reside Within The Heart Of Each Individual"

Yeah, go explain that to people living under constant threat of violent death and see how they feel about inner peace being relevant to a peace prize.

9. Why do you feel so afraid?
I've felt afraid, REALLY afraid for the world, twice in my life time.

Under Reagan, and under W.

Now, I feel optimistic. The world *might* end, sure, but I'm confident that our Commander in Chief isn't trying his best to hasten the event.

For the record I was born under Nixon.

11. I am afraid because Obama is only a man...
It does not change 7 billion minds. We are still a world filled with horrific tragedy. And it will remain that way because, as a species, we progress at a snails pace.

It's hard to feel optimistic when faced with such a cynical reality.

14. No doubt you are right about the world being a fucked up place...
But still, the President of the United States wields considerable influence over the overall tone of the world.

And I'm sleeping a lot better since President Obama took over.

The thing about the Peace Prize that struck me most was what the Russian President said; to paraphrase he basically said 1 year ago we were near cold war levels of dialogue and now things are better thanks to President Obama.

That, alone, makes me feel as though the Peace Prize went into the right hands this time (it certainly hasn't always!).

15. Peace is not the presence of war
I'm confused about how someone who is the commander of the worlds largest military ever, embroiled in two wars with no intention of ending them, and served an irrelevantly short period of time is somehow deserving of the peace prize.

All I hear from you is that he won it for not being Bush.

16. I disagree. He didn't win for being "not Bush", although that certainly helped.
The whole "commander of the largest military the world has ever seen!" is pretty nonsensical. Every U.S. President in recent history (even Carter, another Peace Prize winner) can boast that dubious distinction. What does that matter?

It matters what they DO with it, obviously.

And President Obama is still dealing with the situation he did nothing to create (in fact, as a Senator he fought against it).

What he does NOW matters, of course, but the two points about the wars and being the commander are so irrelevant I just don't get the argument (unless you're a Republican trying to badmouth him even though it was the Republicans that done it in the first place).

The fact that he has served only a short period of time IS a fair argument, I'd say, and I too agree that this prize seems somewhat premature.

18. It is odd. Plus peace is not the absence of war, it's the absence of humans from the planet. We aint
the apex predator on the planet for nothin. It's in the Levis.
