Justice who blocked interracial marriage: ‘Everybody hates me’

By David Edwards and Daniel Tencer
Monday, October 19th, 2009 -- 10:01 am

Beth and Terence McKay wouldn't be married today if Keith Bardwell, a justice of the peace in Hammond, Louisiana, had his way. Bardwell became the subject of intense controversy last week when he refused to grant a marriage license to the interracial couple, saying he fears for the offspring of mixed-race marriages.

Since then, the Louisiana chapter of the ACLU has called Bardwell's decision "tragic and illegal," and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has called for the justice's license to be revoked. But Bardwell is refusing to resign.

"Despite calls for his resignation, the justice himself says he's not going anywhere, that he's not sorry, and that in fact he's done nothing wrong," CNN's Kieran Chetry reported Monday morning.

Asked by a WFAB-TV interviewer if he was a racist, Bardwell responded: "Absolutely not. My definition of a racist is to hate black people, or treat black people differently than anybody else."

So I guess as long as you 'stick to your own kind' the Judge won't deny you a chance to marry

:grr:

3. Well he was just toppled for the title of "Most stupid, ignorant judge'
thanks to the judge that would allow a woman to die alone rather than allow her parnter to visit her in the hospital - only because they were a same sex couple.

8. Bardwell wouldn't have taken the decision he did...
and explained it the way he has, had he not reckoned that it would be accepted socially and politically in his neck of the woods. That's chilling--and I'm sure he based his judgment on observation of majority opinion in his little world. I'm sure he wasn't expecting wider scrutiny--good thing he's getting it.

25. Hey, the hate is earned -- as is its unanimity.
But he could likely diminish his unpopularity just a smidgen by immediately resigning. If he did, I'd agree to hate him a little less, anyway. ;-)

28. What my Baptist preacher father would have asked him.
"Who died and made you God?" He was Free Will Baptist and that is about how he felt. He believed you should not make someone else live what you believed. Not that he believed the way this man did, but he was fanatically strict in his beliefs. He accepted my mixed marriage just fine but he did not like my kids having been christened in the Catholic church. lol Did that not set well with him. But then I always did what I thought was best. My kids were exposed to several religions and raised in none. Oh, did I mention my children probably have every 'race' there is represented in them and they are beautiful people.
