BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG

By Mark Karlin

Not many new books get a 69% discount before they are even released. In fact, BuzzFlash -- which sells progressive books -- has never seen such a slashed price for a book before it came out like the $9.00 Amazon.com is charging for "Going Rogue."

Yes, Palin and "Going Rogue" -- not released until November 17 -- are going down cheap, at a price usually reserved for what are called "remainder" books, the surplus stock of a book that is dramatically discounted.

20. And those two companies
are going to put every independent book seller in America out of business.

More than half are already gone.

22. It's not just those companies - also the economy and electronic publishing...
...but it's certainly true that indies are suffering, and also B&N and Borders.

43. How about we don't buy it at all?
I get stuff at my indie shop that WalMart will never carry in a million years.

It'll be a sad day in America if all we have is WalMart, and we're left choosing between Sarah Palin biographies and Glenn Beck's latest trash.

47. Traditional publishing discount rates:
scholarly: 20%
trade: 40%

A big order on a bestseller gets 46%.

$29 minus 46% = $15.44

Indie pays $15.44 and gives 20% off = $21.46

I'll gladly buy a book for $21 at my local indie shop before I give Wal Mart a penny.

24. you can pre-order books on Amazon
The cost of pre-ordering the book on Amazon is $9. What do you think the value will be after it is released if it is already discounted 69%.

38. Can you preorder, then cancel?
If so, that might be a factor here. Lots of Friends of Sarah might have ordered it just to give it some buzz, but now reconsider whether they want tp part with their cash in this economy.

44. My sentiments exactly.
Even for the bargain price of $9 for her going down, you still run the risk of her speaking and ruining the whole thing. Then you'd have just wasted $9 just the same as if you buy this book!
