ROTFLOL - I just received a robo-call endorsing CAPITALISM
Our country was founded...blah blah blah..."KEEP CAPITALISM ALIVE."

It was a really short message that asked me to press one to hear a message about capitalism. I was expecting a funny anti-Moore screed but no... just a general endorsement of capitalism... Tickles me pink

love it, love it, love it... the capitalists are desperately spending capital to defend their greed

1. That's really, really odd.
I can't imagine who would've funded it. Any chance it was satire?

3. I think we should all support a totally amoral system whose only purpose...
Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 01:42 PM by Ozymanithrax
is to make money for a small group of investors and owners with absolutely no moral or ethical constraints.

This is, after all, the United States of I've got mine so shut the hell up.

4. What kind of "capitalism?"
"Corporate capitalism?" "Crony capitalism?" Or a variation of "Corporate communism?" Or how about that special kind called "Chameleon capitalism" when it's "capitalism" when the rich are making money, but "socialism" where they're losing money and need taxpayer-funded bailouts?

10. Capitalism is a religion, I'm beginning to believe.
Capitalism is not a political system. It's an economic system that can operate in any variety of political systems from democratic to totalitarian states. The totalitarian Roman Empire was very capitalistic but even they gave the gods their due separate from commerce. They also kept up a facade of Republicanism but it was all for show. But now I'm noticing that the proponents of capitalism are living in a fantasy world of myths that they have been fed about the capitalistic system and it works the same. It's based on fear. If you have national health care, the government will kill your grandmother and tell your doctor what to do while you wait in line. Oh maybe you even will go to hell. They haven't gotten that far yet, but I see it coming. Never mind that this is exactly what is happening with the system we have, but they don't seem to see it because Wall $treet has become their god and the exchange houses and banks their temples to worship in.

sealed the deal for me last fall.

We are in the early stages of some national mass psychosis, something to which (looking at history) we are prone to. Yes, capitalism has becoma a religion. Communism was as well, as much as people wish to pretend that men like Stalin or Mao were absolute atheists. The presence of communism kept some of the worst abuses of capitalism, if not in check, at least removed. We are now experiencing Zappa's theater moment, where the curtains lift to reveal the brick wall. Capitalism won the war, toppled one wall while building new ones around the favelas, and has become the reigning religion on the block, demanding absolute obedience.

In a democracy, regulated capitalism is given its legitimate sphere, ala Adam Smith. I don't think there is any way we can supress the entrepenurial spirit in humans, and I don't think we should try. But we are not a democracy, we are a republic sliding into oligarchy for some time now. Companies are no longer run by particular humans, but by boards, shareholders and other immortal beings. The marriage of Jesus and capitalism sealed it in some regions of this country. Capitalism (with a capitol C, the religious fanatic kind) prefers a dictatorship, it makes it all so much easier, because you have to control the variables to keep that stock rising. Fear is the easiest thing to manufacture when you own the media.

11. related - yet unrelated: i had a collection agency call me last night.
the guy tried to act like he was my buddy, doing me a favor. kept saying he understood what i was saying, and that he wanted to give me advice, while simultaneously threatening to put a $32 charge for teeth cleaning for my kids on my credit report. (funny story - i have MetLife for dental and they cover teeth cleanings twice per year for each family member, the dental office keeps trying to charge my general health provider UHC for it. fucking idiots.)

anyways, i explained all this to him and he said, yeah i know i've seen Sicko, and Michael Moore's right and all, but someone's gotta pay this... i cut him off and said, yeah MetLife.

hung up on him.

these calls are getting weirder and weirder...

Reality took a twist somewhere a few years ago and it's been down the rabbit hole ever since. How could Harlan Ellison, Phil Dick, Neal Stephenson and William Gibson all have been absolutely right all at the same time? I feel like I am living in an uncomfortable melange of fiction rather than any sort of reality that I can relate to.

..... and they realize that there's an emerging generation that sees so-called Free Market Capitalism for what it is: Destructive to the earth, destructive to community, destructive to a sustainable economy.
