5. Indeed. Franken made it a mission to recapture Wellstone's seat. I'm in awe of his passion and
drive to become a senator.

I listened to him on Air America and his admiration for Wellstone. I'm so glad he made it to the Senate!

2. Correction: Al Franken will be Paul Wellstone's successor
A man who stands for the same things as Paul did, and he also happens to have Wellstone's seat now. ;)

16. Why argue? He's both.
He's both a successor to Paul Wellstone and a keeper of Ted Kennedy's flame.

And I think he'll be a legend in his own right before he's through.

7. Jusssssssst a tad premature.
Get back to me when Franken's been in the Senate 1/4 as long as Teddy was, and then maybe we can talk.

The man hasn't even completed his first year as a Senator yet.

8. No offense, but it's waaay too early for that, at least imo.
He has enormous potential, and has certainly shown an intelligence and passion that all too many lack, so I say this with no ill will towards Al, but those are mighty big shoes to fill, and I don't think anyone is there yet. I hope Teddy has many successors, and Al may indeed be one of them.

18. +1 Yep, way too early.

There are several public servants (and Franken may be one of them) that are highly capable of carrying Uncle Ted's torch.

IMO, people need to check facts and define what a public servant is/does, then make the argument. However, it is way too early to have this discussion.

Let Uncle Ted continue to rest peacefully.

12. He's off to a great start.
It's too soon to tell how successful a senator he'll be in the long run, but I'm very pleased with what he's done so far. I'm proud to say he's MY Senator, and it's especially gratifying that he has Paul Wellstone's seat.

And getting rid of Norm Coleman was really satisfying, too.

17. Hate to be rude but I can't agree.
Franken has not struck me as well-informed or clever or benevolent
or open-minded. Far from it. Kennedy was not clever either.
But he was truly benevolent.

I keep writing things and deleting them. I'm not sure how you can make ANY of those criticisms.

22. Well informed, clever, benevolent
How do you define these terms in a way that Al Franken does not embody their traits?

The man is a policy wonk and is ALWAYS well informed, is quick to think on his feet (the very picture of clever), and every position I've seen him take has been utterly on the side of the people he serves, not some moneyed power brokers. How can you say he is NOT benevolent?

What evidence do you have?

What news show have you been watching?

Are we talking about the same Al Franken?

19. Give him at least 2 decades and you might be right
There is no one who replaces Kennedy. Kennedy was one of the top 2 or 3 Senators of all time - there may not be another in his class for decades. If there is anyone who has the potential to be, not the successor to Kennedy, but a Senator of similar accomplishment - there is only one current Senator who I think has that potential - John Kerry.

Franken has been in the Senate less than a year - he will have to be in the Senate at least 2 or 3 terms before he is likely to get a committee chair.
