Speaking of the word "bitches", it really is pervasive these days.
My neighbor's 14 year old son was playing catch with us, and he couldn't get the ball past his Mother. It was suggested that he try to toss the ball underhand (so it would fly higher and maybe be harder to catch) and his response was "No, that;s the way bitches throw."

14, and he already tosses "bitches" out as a casual descriptor for women.

When I called it to his attention, he was horrified, because he didn't stop to think HOW he sounded - - and what he'd implied about his Mother, me, and the other women around. He apologized quickly - - but what he needs is to have it called to his attention *every time* he tosses that word out casually.

Perhaps a lot of people should have it called to their attention.... I don't care if I hear the word in songs about made-up imaginary people, but when it crosses into casual speech, and gets applied to real people everyday, perhaps those of us who dislike it should say something?

(Just an observation. If we don't say OUCH when someone steps on our toes, how are they supposed to know what they said stepped on our toes?)

1. Obviously, this is Bart Simpson's fault.
And other degenerate television shows, such as Murphy Brown.

2. I blame Don Imus
:)

No really, I actually blame Bill Clinton's penis.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

3. It's the companion to HOs, doncha know. And the alter-ego to 'dawgs.'
It's everywhere--on TV, radio, music.

Long gone are the days when it was most commonly used when preceded by SONUVA.

Eh...the band plays on...

4. Rap music language emulated because it was so naughty.
And so it enters casual speech.

Wow, that rap music gets around. First it got Don Imus fired, now it brought "bitch" into the lexicon.

8. Sure gets around on the subway a lot.
But I guess it doesn't matter that I and everybody else have to listen to it, because we don't matter.

9. What, rap music?
Don't like it, turn it off. If you don't like other people listening to it, too bad for you.

12. That's odd.
Because I was sure the words "bitch," "dog," and "whore" all predated rap music by at least several years.

Hmm.

5. 'Acceptable' words denigrating women have expanded, while racial ones have declined.
Interesting.

Sexism is okay.

10. well this isn't the first time he's said that and i bet it's not the first time his mother
has heard him say it. Imo as a parent children tend to imitate things they hear at home far more than they imitate what they hear from music or from tv. we have an rule at my house and it's really easy to follow--we don't swear and we don't say "Stupid, hate or shutup" ever, my daughter is almost 13 and so far so good.

13. Words like that have been "normalized" by music, movies, etc.
I was disgusted with the hip-hop reps on Oprah today ~ insisting that these are poets writing about poverty. What a load! They can, and should, write poignantly about poverty, but that has nothing to do with their vile words denigrating women. Nothing but excuses! Oprah really let them get away with their crap I thought, but the college girl guests didn't buy it. Good for them!

14. Perfectly acceptable on this site, as long as one is taking about a
rw woman. I think the term is offensive and that sexism has no place on a progressive site but the big boys around here think allowing that word and others is "freedom of speech", and have deemed those terms as generic.

15. A lot of adults obviously don't spend any time in middle schools
Swearing there is rediculously pervasive to the point where I recall people being unable or unwilling to say a whole sentence without saying "fuck" three times. To put it as they would, "I'm fucking totally fucking serious about that shit". I guess it's percieved as a mark of maturity and independence. It doesn't matter what the swear word refers to, people that age just love to say them. I think it takes a little more maturity to realize that those kinds of words really do hurt people.
