Majority Want to Keep Maine's Gay Marriage Law, Poll Finds
www.mpbn.net/News/MaineNews/tabid/181/ctl/ViewItem/mid/3483/ItemId/9516/Default.aspx

A new poll shows strong support for maintaining the state's new gay marriage law. The poll, conducted last week by Pan Atlantic SMS, also found dwindling support for the tax-and-spending cap initiative known as TABOR 2.

Pan Atlantic's Patrick Murphy says the survey of 400 likely voters found 53 percent opposing Question 1, which would repeal Maine's gay marriage law, while 42 percent favor the measure and six percent remain undecided. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percent.

Murphy says Question 1 is getting a different reaction in Maine's two congressional districts, with voters in the 1st District favoring the measure by a 20 point spread, while voters in the 2nd District remain nearly equally divided. He says among the state's Catholic voters, the measure has a narrow margin of support, 49 to 46 percent.

Equal marriage rights is now ahead by 11 points with only a week until the election. I think my state is ready to make history again.

3. Agreed, we aren't going to have a Prop 8 repeat up here.
"No on 1" which opposes the ballot question overturning Maine's equal marriage law has saved a lot of money for GOTV efforts. Their active phone banking and volunteer management has really helped to turn around opinions and combat the decepetive advertising of Equal Marriage opponents up here in Maine. The trends have been growing towards support of keeping Maine's Equal Marriage laws and this new polling today really shows how the hard work of everyone at "No on 1" has been paying off.

2. Way to go, Maine!
I know such a Mormon-style proposition would never fly over here in Vermont either. Remember too, the longer you defeat efforts to strike it down, the more entrenched and accepted your marriage equality law will become.

4. I see this election as a tipping point for marriage equality.
This will be the first time voters in a state have voted to support Marriage Equality and I think it will be the first snowflake into an avalanche of support for equal rights for all our citizens.

6. I do too
and I see NJ passing marriage equality very soon (lame duck session). Hopefully it will be the spark that lights the fire to set marriage equality everywhere and repeal DOMA.

I just trashed Prop 8 in my Constitutional Law exam today.

7. Equality opponents aren't just fighting against rights anymore
They're fighting against the hands of time. There is a massive generational split on GLBT rights. Those under the age of 35 have no real problem with those that identify as GLBTQ. Any victories they have now will be short lived as they fade in numbers compared to a more progressive youth movement.

10. Celebrate good projections AND donate to help make them come true!
If you can. Even a little bit can help.

Got this email from No on 1 today:

The more we learn about Yes on 1's latest fundraising report, the scarier it gets. Did you know that of the $2.5 million behind Yes on 1's campaign, 84% has come from the same few sources? Mostly that's the radical anti-equality group National Organization for Marriage, which determined to overturn Maine's marriage equality law.1

Their latest ad is just the beginning of the vitriolic, hateful attacks we'll see as we near Election Day. We need to fight back by expanding our critical advertising and Get Out The Vote programs. We can do it but we need another $25,413.

Can you help us fight back by contributing today?

And do you know what's really scary? Their latest finance report only shows their numbers through last Tuesday. If NOM gave $1.6 million by October 20th,2 how much more might they still give to stop equality? And which other national, radical organizations will pour their resources into Maine to mislead Maine voters into stripping our gay and lesbian families of the protections of marriage?

There are only 9 days left to stop them. Nine days. This is the time to step up once more and fight these scare tactics and lies.

We only need $25,413 more-- can you help fight back by contributing $20 today?

If you can't donate money, they also need people to work phones.

12. Absolutely! The GOTV effort will need a bunch of money to succeed
I'm very cautiously optimistic from this polling. If we don't let up the effort, marriage equality will be the law of the land in Maine by popular decree.

11. This is almost were the pre-Prop 8 polls had it going into the election

its not time to get complacent - every vote counts. ...

http://lgbtqnews.com/gaynews/election-eve-poll-shows-prop-8-still-trailing-but-picking-up-support.aspx

A majority of Californians would vote against Proposition 8, a new election-eve Field Poll reveals.

A survey that was conducted Oct. 18 through 28 shows that the measure that aims to deny marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples is supported by 44 percent of likely voters. Forty-nine (49) percent oppose it, and 7 percent are undecided.

Over the past six weeks, the ballot measure has gained substantial ground but still trails by a five-point margin heading into Tuesday's election. The surveys results have a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.

In the last Field Poll, released Sept. 18, the measure was behind by 17 points.

In a prepared statement on the poll, No-on-8 senior campaign advisor Steve Smith said the campaign is "highly energised" by the new numbers.

"The Field Poll shows that Prop 8's deceptive campaign has failed to move their numbers much at all," Smith said. "Prop 8 is trying to run a campaign to get to a Yes vote, yet they have remained in this and other polls well below the 50 percent margin necessary for success."

13. The good thing this time
The "Yes on 1" votes plus undecideds does not beat the Marriage Equality side of the issue. We still need to work hard straight through election day but we're in much better shape than Prop 8 opponents were at the same time in the campaign.

I know a gay guy at my church and I feel bad knowing he can't get married. :(

16. Which state do you live in?
I think it will pass in all states eventually. It will just take longer in more conservative states.

18. I think you have a good chance at marriage equality
within the next decade. It all starts with actions taken at the local level. Write letters to your state congresscritters.
