OMFG This is HUGH!!1 "Edwards' haircuts cost a pretty penny"...
...never mind that Pickles pays $700 for a haircut. :eyes:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070418/ap_on_el_pr/edwards_hair

WASHINGTON - Looking pretty is costing John Edwards' presidential campaign a lot of pennies. The Democrat's campaign committee picked up the tab for two haircuts at $400 each by celebrity stylist Joseph Torrenueva of Beverly Hills, Calif., according to a financial report filed with the
Federal Election Commission.

FEC records show Edwards also availed himself of $250 in services from a trendy salon and spa in Dubuque, Iowa, and $225 in services from the Pink Sapphire in Manchester, N.H., which is described on its Web site as "a unique boutique for the mind, body and face" that caters mostly to women.

...

One reason the cost of the cut was so steep even by Beverly Hills standards is that Torrenueva went to Edwards rather than the candidate coming into the stylist's salon a block off Rodeo Drive.

"I go to him wherever convenient," Torrenueva said. He declined to identify where the cuts paid for by the campaign took place.

49. I think you're right. Didn't they say Kerry spent $400 on a haircut in '04?
These men who are running should all (as they go across country) go to local barber shops to get their hair cut. They would drum up votes by seeming like a "regular guy". ...Plus they would become the talk of the town.

...A woman gets a pass on this...a woman's hair takes too long to recover from a bad cut.

Fortunately, nothing else is happening anywhere in the world that might be worth a reporter's time and effort, so the media can draw our attention to this vitally important story.

5. Imagine if Edwards went into the salon for cut.
The salon would have to be shut down due to security, costing the salon a bunch of money in lost clients. The same is true while visiting the celebrity client. It's not unusual for stylists to visit celebrities at home.

10. Your answer: Personal preference. Here's another snippet from the article...
"Torrenueva — who specializes in men's haircuts — confirmed in an interview with The Associated Press that Edwards is a longtime client and friend.

...

One reason the cost of the cut was so steep even by Beverly Hills standards is that Torrenueva went to Edwards rather than the candidate coming into the stylist's salon a block off Rodeo Drive."

What business is it of anybody's if Edward's chooses an old friend over a stranger to cut his hair? I'd be willing to shrug my shoulders at Pickles' $700 haircut if the reasons for the price are roughly the same, that her stylist is a lifelong friend and flying in from Texas or something. Otherwise she's just being a gluttonous pig.

14. I plan to vote for Edwards
Which is why I wish he wouldn't have done this--I don't want to see him making PR mistakes like this. What's wrong with it?

First, as others have mentioned, there are people in Iowa who would have jumped at the chance to do this at a far lower price (the bragging rights, alone, would've helped their business a lot). Edwards is supposed to be a champion of the underpaid working man, not overpaid people from the Rodeo Drive area.

Second, just the concept of having your hair done by such a person reeks of being overpretentious. Edwards is a politician, not a movie star. Get over yourself already! And how can he convince the all-important swing voters that he'll balance the budget, when he behaves like a spendthrift? :(

Third, ANY Democrat knows that Republicans are going to pounce on anything that even smacks of hypocrisy (after all, Republicans are all intimately familiar with hypocrisy). So why give the Repukes anything to throw up in your face, by making it so easy for them?

Finally, Edwards has hardly been singled out for this particular criticism. Ronald Reagan got all sorts of flak for having several expensive haircuts during a short period of time, when he first became president. (Source? This book: http://www.amazon.com/Clothes-Have-No-Emperor-Chronicle/dp/0671673394)

Every time I hear about a Democrat doing something this stupid, I just want to slap him/her upside the head and demand, "What were you THINKING?" Like it or not, politics IS a popularity contest, and every move a candidate makes is going to be scrutinized. The man's actions are far more important than his haircut at this point...and who the hell needs TWO haircuts in two weeks (esp. if the hairstylist is supposedly good enough to command $400)?

25. So because someone does something akin to CEUs,
the haircut costs needs to reflect every seminar attended? It is not just a cost of doing business? $400 is outrageous for a haircut. I'd wager good money that that cost has more to do with marketing and frou-frou than anything else.

28. It's just supply and demand.
Edited on Wed Apr-18-07 06:54 AM by Cobalt Violet
The man is able to command that kind of price for his time. As a human I'm sure he is only able to do so many haircuts a day. His scissors probably cost more than both haircuts combined. If he is that much demand he can raise his prices as much as he wants, as much as people are willing to pay.

How much does John Edwards get for his lawyering? Are you so outraged by that? How much does his mechanic, plummer, or doctor charge?

37. At last, an argument that makes sense.
But the argument that you were trying to sell earlier just doesn't work. We all have retooled ceaselessly in our jobs or careers. Most professions don't allow you to have such free range with pricing your labor in these days of the "free market." Would that we all could tell our bosses and colleagues that we only have so many hours in a day and if they want face time with use, they'll have to pay for it. Doesn't happen. There are whole professions in which people labor that have not been afforded pay raises even annually or are allowed to set their prices without limitation.

20. I've gone to the same stylist for years when there are cheaper options available...
What am I THINKING? I must be over-pretentious. I should get over myself. Or, could it be that I like this stylist and I don't mind paying a little extra for the comfort of familiarity and the consistency of the quality of my haircut? Hell, she doesn't even have to fly across the country to cut my hair, so I don't have to pay her hundreds of dollars a session.

Republicans have never needed a reason to criticize Democrats. They can do that just for being Democrats. Edwards' paid a discounted rate to a lifelong friend who traveled cross-country to cut his hair and to see his friend. The horror. Further, nowhere in the article does it mention getting two haircuts in a week, so I don't know where you're getting that bull. He also HAS SUPPORTED local spa businesses on a least two separate occasions (Iowa and New Hampshire) and I don't think any of them are on Rodeo Drive.

You're right, Edwards is a politician, not a movie star. But he's a politician ... running for President. He feels he should look his best, so who are you to tell him how to do that, his stylist? Again I ask what business is it of ours? If you're so worried about the appearance of this, then hammer home the point to everyone who brings this up that Laura Bush and Pres. Reagan also spent a lot of money on their haircuts, probably enough to feed a family of 4 for a month.

The cheap ones where the workers are so underpaid that they qualify for medicaid, foodstamps, and subsidized housing.

How dare you think of your stylist as a licensed professional who spend a lot of money and time on good tools and updating her skills all to give you the best services she can? Anyone can cut and color hair. Right?

What law should we pass to cap the price of haircuts? How much jail time should they do?

And everyworker isn't required to be a license professional or so intimatly involved with clients. It is a very unique profession.

(one of the most affluent counties in the country) and the one I go to charges $39.00 for women and $35.00 for men. All of the stylists are constantly taking courses and the owner is very generous with his employees and he makes it a cool place to work. Now I cannot fathom how much better a stylist is to demand a $400 fee.

If he was smart, he would have gone to someone recommended and reasonable when there are so many people who don't even earn $400 a week. The Repugs are going to use this as ammunition against him.

59. Most stylists still have their loyal clients near the fee they charged at the first visit.
As you might guess, I'm rather picky about my hair. I first went to my stylist shortly after her graduation from beauty school.

She charges most of her clients considerably more than she charges me--because I helped to build her clientele. I might add that I tip generously, too, on her STANDARD fee, not what she charges me.

You don't set the price that his stylist is able to get, the free market does. If your too cheap, go else where. There are plenty of sweatshop salons to go to. I'm glad he didn't further exploit these underpaid people.

19. If true, this was a stupid thing for him to do--reminds people of the "Breck Girl" slur.
John Edwards has been doing a great deal to convince people like me that he's more than a handsome face. He's put out real ideas on health care and has one of the more thought out positions on Iraq. He's made himself substantive. As a result he's moved himself into contention for my vote.

I don't particularly care what the man spends to have his hair done--as long as he's spending his own money. As a donor (confession, I have not donated to Edwards or any candidate yet) I would prefer to see him spending my money on stuff which is going to advance the cause--not on his gleaming locks. The worse problem is that billing it to the campaign makes it public record--and fair game. It reinforces an already negative perception of John Edwards as a "pretty boy", "Ken Doll" candidate. When you reinforce that sort of negative perception--think Kerry windsurfing, weaving back and forth--you've done the other guy's work for him.

Sure, this is a minor matter but not paying attention to these minor matters in today's media environment can be fatal to a candidate's chances. I don't want to see that happen with John Edwards.

To ask him if this was the worst thing he could come up with as smear against Edwards, (as they have NOTHING). Why don't we all take a look at what Hannity spends, (or is spent on him), during the course of his average day. I'm sure he's living like a downright pauper. This is the new tactic by the right as of late, keep you eye on it, and call bullshit as it unfolds. Do you notice more and more of this attempted alignment with the poor, working class on the part of the right lately? They don't want to appear like the corporatist, wealth-hoarding, greed mongers they really are. Nice try Hannity, but ultimately, your nothing more than a loud-mouthed bag of shit, and the coutry has woken up to assholes like you. As far as I'm concerned, John Edwards, looks good, and I'm not losing any sleep over the mans haircut prices. Now gas prices, on the other hand, worry me a little, and we all know who's responsible for that now don't we Hannity? The only reason I check into your worthless crap show is to get a kick out of the maggots that call in to blow you.

47. This is, make no mistake, an attempt at a sly continuation of the Coulter comment.

53. My dear late friend Ruben Vazquez Martinez worked as a stylist at Raymond and Nasser on
Madison at 65th for years, he was mentored by Gerarldine Stutz of Henri Bendel and trained in Paris.
He laughed at the money ladies who lunch were willing to pay for a trim. There was no amount too outrageous for them, as the snob appeal for a $100 bang trim was too much for them to withstand.
On the other hand, he went to a Dominican shop on 172nd ST and got his own hair cut for about $8.
He also made a mint out of "special Puerto Rican hair toner and conditioner, made with authentic Boriqua ingredients." The special ingredients? Jojoba oil and lard, mixed together with an industrial scent that we boiled up in his kitchen and put into small jars with a generic label that said, "That Good Stuff, Ruben Vazquez, NYC and San Juan."
When I left NYC for work in Omaha, I went into a salon and got a hair cut. Left whistling, very pleased, gave $5 to the shampoo dude and walked out happy. Two blocks later the manager caught me and informed me I had to PAY! It had been 7 years since I had paid for a haircut as Ruben cut it in his apt. on 192nd ST or else at my house in Jamesport when the beach weather was appropriate.
After $50 bucks of that, I found a barber who could use a straight razor for less than $10 and may Ruben rest in peace, the best haircuts I ever had.

54. Any mention of Laura's $700 hair cut?

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2005/01/20/ratings/index.html

Meanwhile, our favorite TV nugget of the day so far came courtesy of Barbara Walters, who matter-of-factly informed viewers that Laura Bush recently had her hair done by famed New York City stylist Sally Hershberger, who charges $700 for a haircut. Just take a moment to think back to the go-go '90s, and try to imagine what the press' hysterical reaction would have been if word ever leaked out that Hillary Clinton had sat down for a $700 trim.

I really don't want to believe this.
But if it's true,
$ 400.00 is way too much for a haircut.
