Simon Cowell and VT Tragedy
Edited on Wed Apr-18-07 06:53 AM by hiaasenrocks
My girlfriend and I watched American Idol last night to escape some of the horror from VT for an hour or so. They started off with Ryan Seacrest making a nice statement of sympathy. However, after a contestant named Chris Richardson performed, the camera cut to Simon during Chris' comments about the VT shooting and Simon was rolling his eyes. The camera quickly cuts away. Later in the show Simon makes a comment about the tragedy...even interrupting his critique of someone (the last guy) and then resuming the critique, as if a producer had told him he better make a comment because the viewers saw the earlier eye-rolling.

I kind of saw this as phony sensitivity and a CYA comment at the end. I thought maybe I was making too much about this, but so far this morning I have seen it mentioned on two different blogs.

You'd think that for the most watched show (sad!) that they'd be more careful about things like that, in the event of an unfolding tragedy.

More FAUX network crap.

1. I could be way off base, but maybe Cowell rolled his eyes because
he assumed the contestant was trying to garner a sympathy vote by mentioning the tragedy.

3. The guy is from VA. Simon knows that, I would think.
And as a producer, he had his show start off with the comments from his host.

6. I thought so...
Didn't Cowell a couple of weeks back make fun of a contestant that gratuitously mentioned a relative's birthday and Cowell began to tease them about how his mother will be having a birthday. Out of the three, Cowell is the more likely to call them on 'non talent' theatrics, like Sanjaya's hair.

Good call

2. Simon was either rolling his eyes because he thought it was a ploy
for that guy to garner votes, or because he didn't want it to be a downer for the audience. Prolly the former.

5. I don't think either makes sense, actually.
Not that this is a huge issue, don't get me wrong. It was just something I found odd.

7. I think both make alot more sense than your implication
Which is that Cowell was rolling his eyes at the tragedy itself.

I think a lot of people (myself included) think like Cowell, and get very eye-rolley whenever someone tries clumsily to latch on to a "national" tragedy.
