You may all decide it's a good thing that it is because you may decide I'm a deranged, heartless lunatic after reading my post. I wish to point out that I live overseas, in Korea, so I'm getting most of my US news from CNN-Int'l and various websites -- like DU.
1. I have seen and read comments (on many websites and on TV) wanting to know why they didn't force this guy to seek counseling or remove him from VTU when he refused. The English professor said something to the effect that he was the second most disturbed person she had encountered -- in her opinion. My first question is, what happened to the first person? I'm assuming he graduated and went on to live a reasonably normal life. My follow up questions is: Are we now going to force every University, High School and Elementary school student that someone thinks "Might be disturbed," "Is a loner," "Exhibits anti-social behavior" etc into counseling? What will the criterion for this disturbing behavior be? Reading the Anarchists cookbook? Wearing black clothes? A pre-occupation with Nazi Germany? Too much eye-liner on a boy? The person is gay? Maybe a Muslim? I see a real opportunity for serious abuse of the rights of responsible people to be different or become informed about divergent topics.
2. There is a renewed call by some to ban guns. Now, I'm a believer in a 5-7 day waiting period to make sure the buyer is not some recent state mental hospital escapee and the like. But does anyone really believe this is the answer? Timothy Mc Veigh used fairly common items to build a bomb. Should we outlaw fertilizer?
3. The rush to Panic. "Are other Universities at Risk?" A certain amount of calm reflection and analysis is essential after something like this. But the call to action less than 24 hours after the incident, like this is one of 40 such incidents since the first of the year (IMO), only serves to scare people in order to garner a few ratings points.
I'm not trying to diminish the tragedy of this event and I hope my post has not come off this way. I'm just worrying that in people's grief, some people are not rushing to judgement. After 9/11, people were understandably shook and angry. What did we get for our anxiety -- The Patriot Act. I will never deny it -- I am a Civil Libertarian. I worry about any laws or government actions that curb the rights of responsible people. Maybe I'm being too harsh on the people I am criticizing.
Maybe I should have waited a week to post because it may offend some/many people? Maybe my post is utter crap?
