Ticking by Elton John...
Ticking

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin
Available on the album Caribou

"An extremely quiet child" they called you in your school report
"He's always taken interest in the subjects that he's taught"
So what was it that brought the squad car screaming up your drive
To notify your parents of the manner in which you died

At St. Patricks every Sunday, Father Fletcher heard your sins
"Oh, he's unconcerned with competition he never cares to win"
But blood stained a young hand that never held a gun
And his parents never thought of him as their troubled son

"Now you'll never get to Heaven" Mama said
Remember Mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Grow up straight and true blue
Run along to bed"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

They had you holed up in a downtown bar screaming for a priest
Some gook said "His brain's just snapped" then someone called the police
You'd knifed a Negro waiter who had tried to calm you down
Oh you'd pulled a gun and told them all to lay still on the ground

Promising to hurt no one, providing they were still
A young man tried to make a break, with tear-filled eyes you killed
That gun butt felt so smooth and warm cradled in your palm
Oh your childhood cried out in your head "they mean to do you harm"

"Don't ever ride on the devil's knee" Mama said
Remember mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Pay your penance well, my child
Fear where angels tread"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

Within an hour the news had reached the media machine
A male caucasian with a gun had gone berserk in Queens
The area had been sealed off, the kids sent home from school
Fourteen people lying dead in a bar they called the Kicking Mule

Oh they pleaded to your sanity for the sake of those inside
"Throw out your gun, walk out slow just keep your hands held high"
But they pumped you full of rifle shells as you stepped out the door
Oh you danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law

"You've slept too long in silence" Mama said
Remember Mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Crazy boy, you'll only wind up with strange notions in your head"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

1. Wow. I wonder what tragedy John wrote that in response to?
Certainly seems to apply to this one.

2. It's been years since I've listened to that song
But I'll have to pull that album out of the pile and listen to it again soon. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, Elton just writes the tunes.

6. Yeah, I know. Who wrote the song wasn't my point. The song was.

3. One of the scariest damned songs ever.
With that music, the mood it creates is incredible. The first time I heard it, I just sat there and sad, "Wow! What the HELL was that?!"

Still gives me the friggin' willies.

5. I Posted That One Yesterday...Here's Another...
Hearing "Ticking" today is as haunting to me as the first time I heard it in the middle 70s.

While we're on song lyrics...here's another one that has been playing in my head...

He was sitting up there for more than an hour,
Way up there on the Texas Tower
Shooting from the twenty-seventh floor. Yahoo!
He didn’t choke or slash or slit them,
Not our Charles Joseph Whitman,
He won’t be an architect no more.
Got up that morning calm and cool,
He picked up his guns and walked to school.
All the while he smiled so sweetly
And it blew their minds completely,
They’d never seen an Eagle Scout so cruel.
Now won’t you think for the shame and degradation
For the school’s administration
He put on such a bold and brassy show.
The Chancellor cried, It’s adolescent
And of course it’s most unpleasant
But I got to admit it was a lovely way to go.
There was a rumor about a tumor
Nestled at the base of his brain.
He was sitting up there with his .36 Magnum
Laughing wildly as he bagged ’em.
Who are we to say the boy’s insane ?
Now Charlie was awful disappointed
Else he thought he was annointed
To do a deed so lowdown and so mean.
The students looked up from their classes
Had to stop and rub their glasses,
Who’d believe he’d once been a Marine.
Now Charlie made the honor roll with ease,
Most all of his grades was A’s and B’s.
A real rip snorting trigger squeezer
Charlie proved a big crowd pleaser
Though he had been known to make a couple C’s.
Some were dying, some were weeping,
Some were studying, some were sleeping,
Some were shouting “Texas # 1!”
Some were running, some were falling,
Some were screaming, some were bawling,
Some thought the revolution had begun.
The doctors tore his poor brain down,
But not a snitch of illness could be found.
Most folks couldn’t figure just-a why he did it
And them that could would not admit it,
There’s still a lot of Eagle Scouts around.
There was a rumor about a tumor
Nestled at the base of his brain.
He was sitting up there with his .36 Magnum
Laughing wildly as he bagged ’em.
Who are we to say the boy’s in
Who are we to say the boy’s in
Who are we to say the boy’s insane ?

7. Here's a YouTube from 2003
I have the Caribou album. That song is is one of my favorite Taupin/John songs.

I'm probably pulling facts out of thin air but I do believe it was based on an actual bar shooting in NYC.

12. This was wonderful blogslut. I posted a comment, but it
didn't show up for some reason. His words at the beginning were so poignant because it was 30 years after his original, and he stated that 'things have only gotten worse in America since then...' Probably after Columbine but certainly before this latest tragedy.

13. I think new comments take a while on YouTube
Yeah. Sigh.

"When Bernie wrote this song, we thought things would get better, not worse..."
