Tossin' out an idea for DU teachers, or anyone with an opinion:
Would the One laptop per child project ( http://laptop.org/en/ ) work well in some of our poorest areas-- I am thinking specifically of the Appalachian region or Native American Reservations--

Brainstorming thoughts are appreciated on this thread--

1. I don't see why not
They are designed for kids in impoverished areas who don't have reliable electricity.

But even if you have reliable current, it's an energy saver since you can crank it.

yeah, I'd support giving them out to kids here. Kids who can't work on PCs are going to be left behind in a whole host of skills.

2. Brainstorming:
Is there curriculum to go with it? What's it look like? Is it all about learning to use the computer, or just about learning?
Are any peripherals provided? Printers for school? That would be helpful.
How does the internet access work? That would be great and very helpful.
What happens when one breaks or needs work? Is training provided for someone to be the "tech"?

Just some thoughts. I think it would be nice.

3. Good thoughts
To answer your first: Yes-- there would be curriculum on all subjects to go with the laptop (what does it look like? I am just thinking about the 1 laptop per child one which is pictured on the link)-- and it would be both about learning to use the computer and about learning math, science..etc.

You would be amazed at the number of college SENIORS who can't do anything other than email, text and facebook. Information retrieval is out of their range of knowledge....
