Obama plants a piece of New Jersey on White House lawn

Posted by: Steve Holland

snip...
President Obama was on hand for a commemorative tree planting on the White House front lawn.

There’s always a good tale behind these things and here’s this one: Benjamin Harrison planted a Scarlet Oak tree in the same spot in 1889. There it stood through good times and bad, triumph and tragedy, rain and shine, and, well, you get the idea.

Then it rotted straight through and tumped over in a 2007 rainstorm. George W. Bush planted a Scarlet Oak in the same spot as a replacement in 2008, but it didn’t take hold.

Thus came Obama with a Little Leaf Linden tree donated from Halka Nurseries Millstone Township, New Jersey.

It’s supposed to be a sturdier tree so maybe this one will take root. We hope so, because in Washington, if you want a friend, get a tree. Wait a second, that doesn’t sound right.

1. So, Bush planted one and it died?
Why should it be any different than anything else he touched?

Poor tree... it died in self defense.

2. "...the one * planted didn't take hold."
Here's why:

We don't need no stinkin' Scarlet Oaks!

3. Excellent
Maybe the First Bees suggested it. Honey bees love the nectar and pollen of the linden tree.

4. Cue Fox News Poutrage in 3 . . . 2 . . .1
All the things going wrong in the world, and he's lollygagging around planting trees! It's an outrage! Should Obama be impeached over treegate? Is a linden tree inherently socialistic? What's the matter with a good old All-American scarlet oak? Is Obama sending a secret message to his terrorist friends with the tree selection? We'll have Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and an all-star panel on to discuss the latest White House outrage!

6. Why? Next to Obama's name there's a (R) symbol...

(just kidding, (r) = right and (c) = center -- physical positions relevant in the photographs :D )

9. Followed by the inevitable "How could Obama be so stupid?" posts at DU
He should have known the right wingers would get all bent out of shape over the planting of a tree! It's just such an obvious trap, he should have avoided it! Oh, woe is us! Now we'll never get anything done, because the President will have to spend a week putting out this fire, time he could have used to further the aims of the country. Well that does it, I'm not supporting the White House any longer, they can just go rot for all I care. I'm going to work for John Edwards in 2012. Yeah!

12. As an avid gardener who has planted small orchards I will say....
WTF is with the suit!?!

I would love to have seen that pic w/ him in jeans and a Tshirt..... and a bit of DIRT on him.

Perhaps he is not into 'getting down w/ the earth'. I know and love many ppl that do not like getting down and dirty w/ the earth......

BUT - A SUIT !?!

His PR person must not get into gardening either.

:dilemma:

13. Tree plantings are strictly a ceremonial gesture
One or two shovelfuls of dirt, picture time and back to the Oval. Would anyone believe the POTUS dug the hole, positioned the tree and filled the hole by himself?

I durther the president do the gesture with dignity and grace than try to bs us like Bush did with the 'ranch' and brush clearing.

14. I would rather see a REAL event - a button-down at least.
A shovel full in a suit - that's for a Jewish funeral.... been there.

This is a tree growing in the EARTH.

I don't expect him ( or any other dignitary) to dig the hole - BUT I do expect them to respect the action.

Perhaps that is why the other one died.

Offering the earth a new life you are entrusting it to succor - It may just be me, but it is Important to respect.

17. He is a very busy man, so much to fix he doesn't have time to change clothes. LOL
I keep thinking of the scene in The Money Pit. Tom Hanks tells Shelly Long that they have 'weak trees'.
