Dancing with the devil while whistling past the graveyard
2009 October 27
by Ian Welsh

The immediate pushback on my last post was “Rasmussen? They’re a joke.” Now there’s a lot of truth to that, Rasmussen leans heavily Republican. But even they haven’t had results leaning towards Republicans like that in years. In other words, think of them as a canary in the coalmine. It’s not as bad as they say yet, but it’s heading there.

Too many folks are dancing with the Devil, because he or she is a Democrat. Let me repeat one more time, Barack Obama and this Democratic Congress have given the richest people and corporations in America trillions of dollars, have packed the administration with neo-liberals and Goldman Sachs cronies, and are on track to pass a health care bill, which, whether it has a “public option” in it or not, is a regressive tax on the middle class, which will directly be handed over to the health industry.

By the time the 2010 elections roll around, although there will have been a “recovery” of sorts, the majority of people who lost jobs will not have gotten them back, and Americans will feel worse off than they have. Guaran-fucking-teed. I may be wrong about many things, but I am not going to be wrong about this basic economic fact.

Democrats in general, and Barack Obama in particular, have betrayed the principles they claimed to stand for. Trillions for the rich, a few hundred billion for the middle class and the poor while civil rights continue to be trampled. Anyone who thinks otherwise, anyone who tries to cover for them, is dancing with the Devil while whistling past the graveyard.

1. Go post this over on a Nader site or other third party or even Freeper site.
It doesn't belong here.

10. How does standing up for Democratic principles not belong on a Democratic blog?

13. Welll, it's not HER brand of Democratic, donchaknow.
All for free speech, as long as it follows her own beliefs.

17. Sadly so it would seem.
And unfortunately I don't think she realizes how destructive to our party's principles her blind support is causing. This is the exact same type of obsessive behavior that made conservative betray their own principles and made their party a party of nothing.

I am glad most of us are not the same. Thanks bobbolink. :hi:

on a Democratic blog.

Goddess.... dictatorship is ever so "progressive".

20. So you're defending taking from the poor to feed the rich? How do you belong on a Democratic blog?
What you don't get is Obama is just a man. You're viewing the man to be the Democratic party. I got news for you, and I repeat, he's just a man. A man who was elected to represent Democratic principles. And when someone who was elected to represent Democratic principles betrays those principles. It absolutely belongs on a Democratic forum to criticize that. That's one of the big difference between us vs the repub party. We stand up for our principles.

29. Let's see how health care "reform" works out before we leap to any conclusions..
My personal opinion is that it will end up being a gigantic, massive, unprecedented giveaway to the health insurance companies in the form of individual mandates and no or a severely crippled public option.

I would like to be proven wrong but I honestly don't think I will be.

28. TARP: Proposed on Sept 19, 2008, enacted Oct 3, 2008
Clearly, the Congress thought bailing out the biggest of the big wheels was something vital to do.

Now think about helping sick citizens with health care is going..

Do you see the slightest of differences in the two approaches?

2. knr - but it was unrecommended already ...
"...I didn’t get into blogging in 2003 to be a partisan Democrat. I’m not even an American. I got into it to tell the truths that Americans needed to hear if they were going to save their souls and the bodies that house those souls, and if it’s my friends I have to tell unwelcome truths to now, so be it, and be damned."

3. Opportunity
This I beheld, or dreamed it in a dream: —
There spread a cloud of dust along a plain;
And underneath the cloud, or in it, raged
A furious battle, and men yelled, and swords
Shocked upon swords and shields. A prince’s banner
Wavered, then staggered backward, hemmed by foes.

A craven hung along the battle’s edge,
And thought, “Had I a sword of keener steel —
That blue blade that the king’s son bears, — but this
Blunt thing!” — he snapt and flung it from his hand,
And lowering crept away and left the field.

Then came the king’s son, wounded, sore bestead,
And weaponless, and saw the broken sword,
Hilt-buried in the dry and trodden sand,
And ran and snatched it, and with battle-shout
Lifted afresh, he hewed his enemy down,
And saved a great cause that heroic day.

who will hear no criticism of their elected officials, now that they are dems, rather than rethugs.

The hypocrisy makes me sad. :(

11. I think you're just kneejerk reacting.
I didn't conclude the OP calling Obama the devil. The way I see it the OP is calling taking from the poor to feed the rich the devil, and anyone (including Obama) who's going along with it is "dancing with the devil." The OP makes an excellent point in my opinion.

16. Well, the party, at least those in power in the party, haven't exactly been saints,
Not during my lifetime. Time and again I've seen the back room power brokers come down on the side of corporate America at the expense of regular folks. Hell, they've even stomped on one of their own just to make sure that that we the people didn't even have a shot at getting a break.
