An Ironically, Iconically, American Story... The TVA
It only take me a few moments of exposure to Faux News and the nauseous musings of the modern day teabagger to wonder what the world would be like if we had not, as a country, brought electricity to the backwater jerks of this country.

<snip>

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a federally owned corporation in the United States created by congressional charter in May 1933 to provide navigation, flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing, and economic development in the Tennessee Valley, a region particularly impacted by the Great Depression. The TVA was envisioned not only as a provider, but also as a regional economic development agency that would use federal experts and electricity to rapidly modernize the region's economy and society.

The TVA's jurisdiction covers most of Tennessee, parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Kentucky, and small slices of Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. It is a political entity with a territory the size of a major state, and with some state powers (such as eminent domain), but unlike a state, it has no citizenry or elected officials. It was the first large regional planning agency of the federal government and remains the largest. Under the leadership of David Lilienthal ("Mr. TVA"), the Authority became a model for America's governmental efforts to modernize Third World agrarian societies.<1>

I mean the only reason they aren't up to the asses in floodwaters, let alone are able to watch their beloved Faux News, listen to Rush Limpballs, and post on freakrepublic is BECAUSE of the "evil" socialist, big government spender... FDR!

I'm sure there are hundreds of these stories.

Maybe we ought to ask for it all back... ungrateful pukes!

:puke:

1. Goodness, it's been a while since we had a proper South-bashing thread!

on edit: the same thing could be said about the Intermountain West, much of which is just as Red as the South and just as dependent on federal government projects, especially for water.

3. I Agree The Same Could Be Said, And I Think The Same There As Well...
This IS NOT just about the South.

This is about people who forget who made it possible for them the be engaged in the modern world.

You think the Republican Party would have created the TVA??? Not likely.

But the TVA provides the juice to get Republicans elected year after year after year...

Ironic, no???

2. Since the Army Corps of Engineers hasn't been doing the greatest job,
why not have something like the TVA go to work on New Orleans' levees?

5. Hell... I Don't Know Why We're Not...
taking the able homeless and chronically unemployed and cleaning up New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

There have got to be some decommissioned military bases that could be fixed up and used for housing workers and volunteers.

Hell... if I was guaranteed to have my job back when I returned, I'd go down and help out for a couple of months.

Get people down there, get them working, provide a place to stay and a decent wage, and let's fix the situation.

There are going to be more Katrina-like events. We should be able to mobilize nationally to pitch in and help.

I do not understand why this is not happening.
