Second Tainted Pet Food Ingredient Found
I gotta go, but here's more bad news:
Second Tainted Pet Food Ingredient Found

An industrial chemical that led to a nationwide recall of more than 100 brands of cat and dog foods has been found to contaminate a second pet food ingredient, expanding the recall further.

The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday. Previously, the chemical was found to contaminate another ingredient, wheat gluten, used by at least six other pet food and treat manufacturers.

Natural Balance said it was recalling all its Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, its Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and its Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.

The Pacoima, Calif., company said recent laboratory tests showed the products contain melamine. It believes the source of the contaminant was rice protein concentrate, which the company recently added to the dry venison formulas. Natural Balance does not use wheat gluten, which was associated with the previous melamine contamination, it said.

24. "TheCompany that supplied tainted wheat gluten to MenuFoods sought to buy large amounts of melamine"
http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/156967.html

The notion that melamine could be a deliberate additive -- not an industrial mistake -- arose as early as April 5, when Stephen Sundlof, head of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said that the pet food recall could turn into a criminal investigation if investigators find that melamine was added deliberately.

Later, the New York Times reported that the Chinese company that supplied tainted wheat gluten to Menu Foods sought to buy large amounts of melamine through Internet trading sites.

9. I'm continuing to feed my dog Natural Balance.
But she gets Duck/Potato food, which doesn't have wheat or rice (or corn for that matter). She's allergic to many things and that's how we ended up with that particular formulation.

At this point, I'm hoping the potatoes in her food come from Idaho, not China.

14. Go to an indie pet store.
Google Maps is a good way to find them. Go to Google Maps, type in "Natural Pet Food, (city), (state), (your zip)" and quite a few should pop up.

25. I am doing the same thing you are
I too have a highly allergic dog and he has been on the Natural Balance dry foods for about 2 years and we have seen a great improvement on his allergies.

He was on the Venison and Brown Rice but showed no symptoms (thankfully) and we returned the product and got the Duck and Potato formula which we had used in the past with no problems.

I will continue on the Duck and Potato because I don't want him to suffer from his allergies but this whole thing freaks me out.

I want these bastards selling this tainted crap to hang from the nearest tree. It seems that more and more information being gathered suggest that this was on purpose.

As someone pointed out in the thread yesterday regarding preparing your own food for your pets, "I've got potatos in my cupboard but I don't know how I will catch enough duck" to keep Vinny (my dog) happy.

11. Oh that's just great
I was thinking we were ok feeding products without the wheat gluten, but if they're finding it in rice now, we're in trouble............ And who's to say it's not in human rice?

With two big Borzoi's, it's going to be hard to cook for them.

13. Try Natures Variety
I've recently started with their canned food which has a higher percentage of meat than other canned foods. After reading their website, I felt pretty good about giving it to my pets. But who knows, Natural Balance was supposed to be one of those "high quality" foods as well.

15. The same crap (and worse) is probably in human food...
...where ingredients come from China.

WHAT, pray tell - stops a TERRORIST from contaminating our food supply, if it's this easy? Is this stuff INSPECTED before it's allowed into the US?

Now, *Resident Sociopath can beat his chest about Homeland Security ALL he wants - but until and unless our borders AND or ports are secured and every item and person coming IN to this country is inspected and investigated - it's non-existent.

Mr. Sociopath up there on Capitol Hill simply uses that conveeeeeenient little phrase "Homeland Security" to create a pretense - an appearance - that he's doing his job.

BUT HE'S NOT.

And meanwhile, our FOOD, our WATER and our POWER GRID are wide open to any OTHER sociopath who wants to contaminate it.

Chew on that a while.

22. 1.3% of Imported Food Tested - 850 shipments detained last month alone!
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/health/sfl-afood17apr17,0,6358332.story

With only a minuscule percentage of shipments inspected, they say the nation is vulnerable to harm from abroad, where rules and regulations governing food production are often more lax than they are at home.

"FDA doesn't have enough resources or control over this situation presently," said Mike Doyle, director of the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety, which works with industry to improve safety.

Last month alone, the FDA detained nearly 850 shipments of grains, fish, vegetables, nuts, spice, oils and other imported foods for issues including filth, unsafe food coloring, contamination with pesticides and salmonella.

And that's with only 1.3 percent of the imports inspected. As for the other 98.7 percent, it's not inspected, much less detained, and goes to feed the nation's growing appetite for imported foods.
