Blue Dogs Win Huge Victory For The Health Insurance Industry
The bitter truth From Jon Walker at Firedoglake:

October 28, 2009 4:00 am

In a huge victory for the health insurance industry, hospitals, and PhRMA, the Blue Dogs managed to stop the robust public option tied to modified Medicare rates. The Blue Dog Coalition, who must call themselves “fiscal conservatives” purely as part of some elaborate ironic joke, fought tooth and nail to kill the robust public option, which would have saved the federal government roughly an additional $85 billion. It would also have provided families with an option roughly 10-11% cheaper than the typical private health insurance plan. That would be roughly a $1,400 a year reduction in premiums for the average family.

The Blue Dogs fought hard and they won a big victory for the for-profit health insurance companies. If I were an insurance company CEO, I would be writing each of them a very large thank you note (i.e. a campaign contribution). Of course, today was a huge defeat for the American taxpayer, serious health care reform, and working class Americans who are going to be denied a robust public option which could have saved them thousands of dollars.

Their efforts to weaken the public option make it clear who the Blue Dogs really represent. With a few notable exceptions, the Blue Dogs don’t stand with working class Americans or for “fiscal conservatives.” When it really mattered, the Blues Dogs fought for the health insurance corporations, regardless of how much their efforts will hurt the federal deficit or middle-class Americans who need relief from out-of-control premiums.

Progressive Caucus? VOTE THIS DOWN. This piece of cowardice is a slap in the face of Americans.

Force action on Single Payer. HR 676 to replace 3200.

And Mr. President, as it stands this morning, you are now losing the first of the three primary stated goals of your young administration---health care reform. Your foes will now be further emboldened to attack the next target.

This is the last straw.

Do it. Thanks.

Dear xxxxx

Congressman Wiener needs your help on his single payer Medicare For All amendment. I just got back from a conference in Boston where Rep. Wiener asked for help on two things:

First, and urgently, he wants people to contact Speaker Pelosi and ask her to keep her promise to allow a floor amendment and floor debate on a single payer amendment to the House bill. Although the Speaker promised such a floor amendment in July , there is a strong likelihood that she will back down on that promise in the very near future unless she gets a flood of emails, faxes or calls. So let's flood Nancy Pelosi's office with faxes like we did once before.

http://www.1payer.net/faxapp/senders/add/cid:40

Remarkably, Speaker Pelosi said in Democratic Caucus "If it were up to me, we would have single payer." Let's remind Nancy Pelosi with a flood of faxes: it IS up to her because she is the Speaker.

Second, Rep. Wiener asked that we flood our Congresspersons with calls and push them to support the single payer Medicare For All amendment. About 100 other Congressmen are solidly behind it now and even blue dogs are wavering, so Wiener thinks a push on Congress will help a great deal. You can send a fax supporting the Wiener single payer Medicare For All amendment right now. Just click here.

You can send a FREE fax to Pelosi very simply and easily.

Here is the link to the fax.

It simply asks Pelosi to keep her promise for a floor debate in the House. The Pelosi fax linked above is very important. You can also call her office at

202-225-4965.

Don't let her back down on her promise of a single payer floor debate in the House.

"Lies, damn lies, and promises from Democrats. An amendment allowing states to create state-level single-payer healthcare has been stripped out of the House healthcare bill, after having passed in committee back in July by a vote of 27 to 19. And rumor has it that a vote on national single-payer that was promised in July in exchange for skipping a committee vote on it will now be denied..."

I've faxed Pelosi and my Rep (Eshoo) to allow it to be brought to the floor (and to support it, but it will clearly only be a symbolic victory even if it gets to the floor:

This quote from the "hoax" post says it all-->
"A conversation I had with Congresswoman Betty Sutton is typical. She told me that the Kucinich Amendment was no big deal and shouldn't be paid any attention to. She said she wanted everyone to focus on the Weiner Amendment on which she planned to vote yes. Asked if there was any chance the Weiner Amendment would pass, she replied of course not."

I just hope the CBO score shows that it would have saved the most money.

How Drug-Industry Lobbyists Got Their Way on Health Care
http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1931595-2,00.html

Your rep got an amendment through that made it into the final House bill, it gives makers of biologics 12 years of data exclusivity.

"...Waxman had pushed to shield biologics for no more than five years — the same amount of time that traditional pharmaceuticals get under the Hatch-Waxman law. President Obama proposed seven years as a compromise.

Waxman had pushed to shield biologics for no more than five years — the same amount of time that traditional pharmaceuticals get under the Hatch-Waxman law. President Obama proposed seven years as a compromise.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), though, argued in June that giving biologics makers any period of exclusivity at all could actually stifle innovation. Biologics are so much more complex and expensive to produce than traditional drugs that the barriers to would-be "biosimilar" competitors are already high, the FTC said. Giving biologics further protection — particularly the 12 years of exclusivity that the industry wants — would merely encourage firms to tinker with what they have rather than drive them toward "new inventions to address unmet medical needs." ...."

This is what I simply cannot comprehend. This incremental, toe-in-the-water, fragmented joke, that won't even take effect fully until after 2013.

Are these people oblivious to the fact that Republicans will move hell and earth to tear apart any of these weak little baby steps toward effective health care reform? To Republicans, it will as simple as ripping down wet cardboard.

Damn to hell what these people are doing.

are now hard at work destroying the dems, too.

If this isn't proof positive that we are no longer a democracy, I don't know what it would take.

Approximately 70% of the public want a public option, yet congress is ignoring us in favor of pleasing their corporate overlords. They have been bought out. This is blatant conflict of interest and corruption at the highest levels of government. They don't even try to hide their malfeasance anymore.

What does it say about a government that would start 2 preemptive wars over the deaths of 3,000 Americans, yet knowingly support an industry that kills 40,000 of its' citizens each year? The greed of our elected officials is stupefying.

I think it's time to drop the pretense and call it what it is, an oligarchy.

These crooked politicians (dems and repubs alike) Dont even hide the fact that they dont care what the people want anymore.
Its all about money to them.
When 70% want a public option and still dont get it, then its obvious who these guys serve.
And its not the people.

I thought obama would be the pioneer of stopping this, But it looks like he intends to be the leader of keeping it going instead. Maybe we are now seeing why health insurance companies contributed so much toward his campian?? they are certainly getting a good return on thier investment with this bill.

America has become the joke of the world.

We declare wars and supposedly fight to bring "freedom" to other countrys.

But we are governed by a corporation.

Free my arse.

THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT HAS BECOME A STRAIGHT UP CORPORATION.

A CORPORATIION WITH TWO PARTYS (REPUBS AND DEMS) FIGHTING FOR CONTROL OF THE CORPORATION.

THIER FORM OF SERVICE IS POLTICAL FAVORS, AND THIER COMPENSATION IS LOBBYING DOLLARS.

UNTIL LOBBYING IS REMOVED FROM THIS JOKE OF A GOVERNMENT, THINGS WILL CONTINUE TO RUN THIS WAY.

AMERICA.........BY THE CORPORATION, FOR THE CORPORATION, AND GOVERNED BY A CORPORATION.

I AM SERIOUSLY LOOKING INTO MOVING TO ANOTHER COUNTRY. BUT SO FAR, ITS NOT AN EASY THING TO DO.

Just think Company Store with the power of the Federal Government behind it, and it becomes clear.

The U.S. Government works for and represents Corporate America, while the citizens have now become 'Subjects' to Corporate America to be exploited through the Corporate Government Store. And it's all legal, because awhile back, the Representatives of the citizens sold them out to Corporate America.

Most people learned the difference between "something they want" and "something they are actually going to get" at around the age of 5. Yet there is a large contingent of DU that apparently never learned this. The idea that single payer is ever going to pass out of any Congress of the next two decades is just as likely as single payer passing under Bush and a Republican Congress. Sure, there will still be people like you who try to pretend that this isn't true. But that doesn't change the reality that we live in.
